started my anual hand detail of my zr-1

90 ZR-1

New member
I'm still fairly new to detailing and I don't yet trust myself with a buffer so I'm going at this by hand. I dove right in this morning and I wasn't thinking so I don't have any of the typical 50/50, pre/post pics I just have a few pics taken after I'm 90% done before it just got too hot to continue for me today. I've just started on the exterior but I've already done VM topped with nxt. However I've found some road grime that I need to get at with some clay.

Anyway enjoy the pics (taken with my l.g. dare since I was a moron and left my DSLR in another state) and be prepared for a few questions after the end

I still need to add another coat on nxt I think and then top with s100. What I'm looking for now are products that will work on the weather stripping and trim, and also the black belt line on my car which you can see in this pic:

also can you use a tooth brush to clear excess wax from emblems ect or what should be used

I still need to do the interior and the trim and the the door jams so I'll update this thread when I finally get to all of that.

Thanks for the help and for looking :)

Wow, that turned out really nice for manual application. Great clarity on those side shots. I wish my 3 had a minimal amount of orange-peel like your ZR-1, but I think those cars are not only in separate leagues, they are playing different sports. (I'm dangerously assuming you're still on the original paint. It's too hard to keep 20 year old paint that nice by hand.)

Awesome job!

thanks for the kind words, yes the paint is original and since I got her in 99 she's always been hand washed/waxed. I want to step upto a pc but i'm afraid to lol

You get props for doing it by hand.

Now get a buffer! If an idiot like me can use one, you can too.

Keep up the nice work

Got_Leather: thanks for the kind words

Evolution IX I tend to agree :woot2:

craigdt Thanks, I'm trying to work myself up to getting a buffer but so far I haven't been able to take that jump yet. I want to get things done better and quicker but hey who doesn't :bawling:

My real job doesn't want me on friday (ok they don't want anyone schools closed) i've got a few errands to do in the morning then i'm going tot try and get this car finshed...well at least the waxing part. Then maybe the mustang exterior, then move onto the interiors.

Great work, the car is in great condition for hand application.

On a side note I love the ZR1's and yours is a excellent example of a great machine.

Great work, I agree with craigdt, if I can use a PC so can you. I know its a big step because of the fear of burning paint, burning trim *cough* Lambo *cough*, but you will love it when you take the step. Mad props for doin it by hand btw

ah yes the lambo, I heard about that from scottwax on another board we're on. I am worried about that but I do want to improve the finish on the car so I guess I'm going to have to man up and do it
