Should I attempt this, offer my detailing service?

Depending on how thick the f***tards sprayed and how much area they shot, clay might not remove all of it. Since you're intentions are to pull the paint from the car, it has to go somewhere. The pad will take a beating if it is effective in removing paint.

Personally I agree with the above post about being perceived as the source of the scam. I would not offer services in this situation, IMO.

It looks as though they only got like one "coat/pass" to do it. I looked a little bit closer when I left the note (I went out before you replied to this thread advising me against it). We'll so how it goes.

Reasons I'm not necessarily worried about this turning around and "hurting" me - Whenever this occured, all weekend, I was never alone, and was always in friend's rooms, at parties, or talking to campus safety (obviously, for another incident...). I had somehwere to be all weekend, and I was there. Besides that, the only person I've offered this to is the Maxima (so far). Also, these assholes tagged my building's elevators, and basement hallways. It seems to me like if someone wanted to make a profit off of this, that they would be relying on way too many things: they wouldneed to hope that my college won't be footing the bill for a respray, and that they don't have insurance that will cover a respray, nevermind the fact that this is now considered a hate crime and all that good stuff.

I figure, the only person right now who I offered this to is that Maxima, and really the only reason to do so was that I checked that car out in the past when passing it in the parking lot. I felt like I knew them, or connected since I too am a Maxima enthusiast. That paint is also something hard to match when respraying, something I'll mention to the owner if they get in touch with me.

Who knows, the owner might not even respond, and if that's the case I won't be doing any cars, I have no idea what the other kinds of cars got tagged. The only reason I knew the Maxima was is because the report/poster for the event had a pic of the door, and I recognized the paint and door handles.

Also, good point on the paint "lifting" into the pad, but now I have to wonder, do people throw away pads after detailing single stage paint? Wouldn't clearcoat also get embedded into the pad?

I just have an itch to use my Porter Cable again, plus I ahve a couple of friends bugging me about details.

Feel free to keep giving me feedback, I appreciate it all so far.

so far we've got 3 for staying away and 2 for doing the detail - it seems that people are telling me no for other reasons besides "not being able to".

Usually SS paint washes out of the pads.

I would possibly offer help to the fellow Maxima owner, but I would not mention it to any of the other victims. That would be a bit suspicious I'm afraid. You're making money off of their misfortune. People are quick to acuse/blame when their property has been harmed.

i dunno man thats s*** sucks ive seen my four star clay remove alot of different forign paints by itself its definitely worth a shot. youre a good man for helpin out too bad there seem to be more of the ladder these days

After a lot of thought, I'm probably only going to be doing the Maxima's, unless he/she refers others to me. I'm not going to go out and put notes on all the other cars - I really have no idea who else got tagged, that would require going through the whole lot to find out. I hear ya, as I said, who knows if this person will even come to me for help. I've done what I can to this point to help out, now it's up to him/her whoever owns the car. I don't even know if they're allowed to take care of it yet - something with the investigation might make him/her not take care of it for a while anyways.

Thanks for the responses guys, I got what I needed and more.

Except - if SS paint washes out, and so does clear coat, why would using this pad on spray paint be different? Especially if I can get a lot out by hand/clay.

Go cheap clay can be expensive try some lacquer thinner from Lowes a soft rag to remove the spray paint. Then put a cheap coat of wax over the areas the thinner was used. No need for hard rubbing let the product do the work. It is safe as long as there is clear coat and will not harm windows trim may fade a little but can be fixed with an exterior dressing. I have done this for over 10 years to remove overspray when spray painting fender wells, even used it for overspray removal in body shop class.

Very easy fix

This is probably not worth the risk. Not saying it hasnt worked for you, but that could get dangerous in a parking lot.

they might pin you as the artist??? dont leave a card talk to them in person. fix one dudes car and the rest will get the word.

Yea....the deed is done though, the letter has been out there for hours now. I have no idea who this person is - I can't talk to them in person. I have no idea if all these victims are related either, so word of mouth will be hard. Ahh well, it was a good thought. I probably don't have the room to bring my buffer back home after school's done - my car's gonna be packed. We'll see how this goes.

Oh, and I didn't think the clay bar would be too expensive, considering I was hoping to use it on all of the car's panels that I repaired. But doing one car, you're right. That would be expensive.

i used meguiar's 83 to take off clearcoat overspray which is about the same consistency of spray paint. most people don't wax their cars anyway, so i'd just use the PC and something like 83, take the paint off, and be done with it. $50 is steep, try $20 for something like that. it would take all of 10 minutes a car.

$50 is accounting for car washing fees (I'm in a parking lot, I have to pay to get a wash), time for taking off the paint and waxing full car, and possibly accounting for a trashed pad. I didn't think it was that steep considering everything, but we'll see. I haven't gotten a response yet.

I thought about using some of the products I have at my disposal by hand first, and then polishing by machine. I would think SFX-1 to be more aggressive than Sratch-X, but I may be wrong.

I saw that detail, very impressive. I'm really looking to only use what I have though - I'm not a pro. Thanks for the link though. :xyxthumbs

AN ARREST HAS BEEN MADE!!! and no, it's not me....:getdown

Hopefully I can get a little business with this Maxima...and now free of worrying about being blamed for this, hopefully I can get other cars to follow. Getting money doing something I love....it would be amazing.

And btw...just because customers don't wax their own cars, doesn't mean it's worthless for me to do it. I need to get rid of that wax, and it'll make it look great.

I need to head out to my car, so I'm going to check and see if that paper is still out their with my info...it's gonna rain tongiht though....dammit

Update, the owner was appreciative, but works in a body shop back home, and is going to take care of it there. Oh well, no detailing for me. It was a good thought - thanks for the opinions.
