sometimes the cars just dont look as good as you'd hoped

i detailed a camaro SS with 400whp+ yesterday for 5.5 hours.

DACPx2, GEPC, mose wax, s100.

I worked so long and so hard on it, and there were NO SWIRLS at all when I was done.

So what's the catch? The paint has a million tiny rock chips--nothing I can do about those. Kind of ruins the paint, no mtater how unswirled it is. It made me sad that I just could not get it looking as new as I'd hoped.

Do you guys ever have this happen? It's very frustrating.

Just to let you know your not alone:

I have a '99 Chevy S10 Pickup with issue similar to yours. The hood and top of the cab have what could similar to small fibers all over the surface. They're pretty much the same length. I've had several people look at the surface with no suggestion on how to repair the issue.

I'm a poor youngin so I can't afford a 'new' vehicle. As such my Jetta which is in very good condition came with a lot of chips that I wish it didn't have. I'm trying to learn to repaint vehicles so hopefully I'll be able to take care of it but it's very frustrating to me as it is now. Another vehicle I had a hard time with was detailing a 4runner which was in excellent condition except for the fact that it had a repainted bumper due to hitting a deer and the body shop never could get the paint to stick well to the front. Anyways it sucks to see a shining silver than then a little black patch of plastic on the bumper.

Most folks are not aware that (in my area) a professional touchup of the entire car can cost as little as $80.

Their are people out their that air-brush chips and scratches for car dealers. They do a great job, ask around in your area who does this . Its a lot cheaper than a repaint.

Unfortunately, I experience this often. I hate it when I get a car to look good except a part that has paint flaws beyound the capabilities of my PC.

I don't come across rock chips as often as I see paint damage due to bugs and/or tree sap.

I have the same thing on the Accord. Rod Kraft (of Meg's fame) looked at it with a magnifying light and determined that it is one form of clearcoat failure. Luckily, I have several other forms busting through all over the hood and roof; the awful look is nice and even:D

Spet--I think it's the nature of the beast. Anything you try to perfect will highlight weaknesses in other areas.

I had the same problem on a black 7 series BMW I polished this past weekend. Generally I love detailing black cars because people get used to their swirlmarks, minor scratches, etc. We all know that nothing shines like a beautifully clean black car, so when I'm done the owners are usually very pleased.

Well the car I just did had a bunch of circular scratches on the hood where it looks like somebody got a small rock or something in a wax applicator and made circular scratches that just wouldn't come out all over the beautiful black paint. :( The worst part was that I don't think the owner had noticed them before I pointed them out.

Oh well, the rest of the car still looks great. I usually think of it this way, if you're almost satisfied with it as a detailing crazed maniac, chances are the average joe (or even mild detailing enthusiast) you're detailing for will be ecstatic. :D
