Lol, I rubbed it, seemingly, endlessly. Then I did it again...

My 2 cents say it's tar/asphalt. I'd say either clay it or use kerosene with an MF towel.

If you must, try picking at it. with your nail. I've encountered plenty of contamination where nothing gets it off.

Only if it's protruding, never if it's an actual indentation - but I've never seen an indentation like that give a polish trail. Happens with the polisher all the time though on real grabby contaminants that just didn't come out.
