Some Questions For Zymol Users

I'm doing a car on Saturday that is currently Zaino'd & the guy wants Zymol Concours putting on.

1) Will HD Cleanse be sufficient to remove the Zaino? The car is swirl free so no polishing should be needed.

2) Any suitable shampoos to use after it's done or any that he should avoid?

3) He's asked for a suitable QD to use afterwards that wont shag the Zymol look, I'm guessing field glaze is the way to go?

Thanks in advance gents.

HD should be good enough for removing the old Zaino. Field glaze is a good choice to use, but there are other detail sprays he can use that will not take away from the appearance. I am currently using Wolfgang's and it can be used on either sealant or a wax.

I would think so, but I've never actually tried it. I have been able to remove other waxes with HD-Cleanse without a problem, but I've never tried it on a sealant.

Pretty much any shampoo is fine. Personally, I use Optimum Car Wash. I try to avoid the shampoos with wax in them because they don't work well. The important thing is that the car is washed in a way which will minimize swirling.

I've yet to find a QD which perfectly maintains the look of just applied Zymol. I've used Field Glaze and Pinnacle Crystal Myst in the past and they both maintain a lot of the slickness and depth of shine but they also add a lot more gloss to the paint. To me after I use one of these QDs it looks more like I've used a sealant than a wax because of the extra gloss.

What about using a mild cleaning QD, such as ONR diluted as a QD? I haven't tried this, but perhaps that would help just clean and maintain the Zymol looks.

I'll see if I can lend a hand. IMO Zaino seems to be a mild lsp, so the hd cleanse should be able to remove it (provided that there isn't a lot of it caked on from years of accumulation). What I would do is to (by hand) clay, then use a paint cleaner that's hand friendly (megs, mother's, gliptone for otc; Sonus may also work, but their polishes are more geared toward rotary and pc buffers).

Follow the paint cleaner with the HD Cleanse, and then you can apply Concours as directed by Zymol. I have been hearing how some people like using a QD or Field Glaze right after the application of a Zymol; I personally would not recommend using a qd on a freshly applied EGZymol. A fresh coat of an EGZymol, to my eye, has the most potent look and the most violent color response when its applied new, and all by itself without the aid of a qd. After a coat of zymol is applied, I would come back to finish with a final wipe-down with either atomized water and a well graded mf, or if you prefer, it can be done dry provided that there isn't any lingering dust on the surface.

After the zymol has gotten at least a couple of weeks old, then IMO you can apply a very mild QD to cut some lingering haze and provide a hint of moistness. I'm not really a fan of the Field Glaze (sounds funny), as it has left my surface on a couple occasions with a greasy look. Some may call that look "wet", but it didn't look particularly clear when I used it, as opposed to one or two good qd's I've used since trying out Field Glaze. Experiment with one or two brands as well as Field Glaze, and see which one will support your zymol finish the best.

Good luck.

Edit: Any reputable name shampoo should help maintain your finish, provided that it is wax friendly (supposedly non-wax stripping). I have used Mother's CG shampoo for many years, and so far it has provided the best cleaning effect while maintaining my wax finishes. Black Magic shampoo is also a good choice.

Thanks for kicking in here, lbls1. So, what are some examples of mild QDs in your mind. The mildest I could think of was ONR, which you can dilute as much as you want and shouldn't add gloss of it's own.

Sonus' Carnauba Spritz is one of the best graded and mildest qd's I've run across so far. Pinnacle Crystal Mist is also a good one; PoorBoy's also has a good QD.

Velobard, you know as well that I'm crazy about Zymol Detail QD, but I feel its a bit stronger than I'd like for a fresh EGZymol finish. Detail is ideal for older carnauba finishes, and its also great for heavily accumulated finishes that has developed hazing. Try any two of those brands as well as field glaze to see what kind of results you get (for the author). Believe it or not, I like Zymol Detail A LOT better than Field Glaze.

I've only tried Field Glaze on top of Vintage, and I like it quite well. You do need to make sure that you buff it completely dry or it will streak. Looks like I need to pick up a bottle of Zymol Detail.

SuperBee might convince me to give field glaze another shot; It may be hard bc Sonus has worked like a champ for me so far w/o fail!

I believe your question 1 and 2 are pretty much answered and I will just like to add on your question3. I have been using quite a bit of carnauba products recently and I find the Quick Detail from VW and Quik Shine from Clearkote seems to work very well with carnauba products, retaining that deep, wet look on the car.

One more question (sorry) -HD Cleanse, better applied by hand or with the PC ?

Hand is recommended but I used a moist grey 4" pad to help spread it thinly. Worked fine but HD Cleanse is not the easiest product to use IMO. PC was easier than hand for me. I tried both. By hand was a bear to remove. By PC was not a piece of cake, but easier to remove.
