Some Honda paint is SS

Yeah, props to you for finding this! Proves that some new cars are outfitted with SS. Any way to find more vehicles or anything? Thanks!

This is great stuff I would be real interested in what other manufactures are using on their cars....also paint thinkness of them

*sticks foot in mouth* wow, that is some hard evidence there! Good to know! Blows my mind that a major manufactuer woudl use singel stage though!

Interesting to know. My 99 Integra was Tafetta White and it was clear coated. Where can we find this information for Honda cars that were manufactured with the Acura badging?

Amazed me too...considering that most Honda paint of late has looked pretty ugly in terms of gloss, orange peel and runs, even with a clearcoat...I would like to see how some of the single stage paints are holding up and looking after a few years.]

If you look at where the car was made, I believe it would be the same process for an Integra and Civic. Otherwise I'm not sure where you'd find the info. It looks as if only the Odyssey and Pilot white's were cleared, so maybe it's just the trucks and vans for extra protection (though the CR-V wasn't cleared...maybe they call it a car internally)

I just realized my little typo in my first post too :bubba

You would think so, but if this is single stage shine then I am impressed.

I only use the underside of the hood because it is the most obvious way I have found to identify when something is clear coated. I have seen non clearcoated hoods and they look nothing like that.

I find it interesting that it does't go across the board.
It seems to depend on the model and where it was produced as to whether or not the Tafetta white got any clear.

I wonder if that also applies to Acura models???

Edit:opps meant to say Acura

The older Hondas had way better paint. The kind of paint people have been seeing on the 7th gen Accords are absolutely appalling, the Odyssey too. Lots of overspray and orange peel...just not something that you'd call a good paintjob.

I don't know why your hood would be clearcoated, my trunk and hood aren't and I'm pretty sure I have a clear on my car.

My trunk was clear coated underneath too. You can see the gloss in this picture.

I've never actually compared it to another tafetta white integra hood from the same year, but I have seen the underside of many integras and mine is the only one of any color I have seen clear coat on the bottom of the hood.

Jngrbrdman- so what do non-clearcoted pieces under the hood and trunck look like? I assume more dull/muted but if that's the case then why can't you tell a difference on the actual paint? Where I'm going- All of the car's I've worked on have had a CC and all that I can remember were 'not so shiney' under the hood. So if that was SS and I polished it couldn't I get it to shine like a regular car that had SS paint?

I'll have to get a picture of my friend's hood. It is more of a matte look and definitely not glossy.

oh, and it's not a Type-R. It's a GSR sedan. ;) They didn't make a Type R sedan in the US in 99.

I find it hard to believe that anyone uses single stage paint anymore, especially when BC/CC are so much shinier, and take longer to fade, oxidize, etc...

An easy test to tell if a car has CC! Take a MF and some Polish or compound and rub a corner of a lower panel just so it's not noticable. If you see any color come off and onto the MF then there is no clear coat. I now Lexus never put CC on their black cars until the past year or so. Ford and Chevy were the same in the early 90's with SS on white, red and Black. All paint will fade or dullin' even Clear coat. The fade on single stage colors is just more noticable. The thing you do get with just SS is a deeper refelction and less noticable scratches. CC is like a magnifing glass for scratches. Check out Chip Fooses' Pickup that he has. It's SS black and has the best shine and depth you will ever see. So a search for Chip Foose and Overlord (that is what they called the truck) The truck is breathe taking!!

Thats my 2 cents,

Your microfiber test will only tell you if there is oxidation on the single stage. Try that test on the uncleared paint under your hood and see what comes up. If the paint isn't oxidized then color won't transfer just with rubbing compound.

Where did you read that Foose's '56 was single stage paint?
