so the neighbour complained about me.....

From the other side, I've been doing this for 20+ years and it's weekend warriors just like you who working out of their garage without any overhead that hurt all of us professionaly. Would you xxxxx if your neighbor decided to open up an auto dismanteling yard in his garrage?? What about a surgeon, a bar, or a mortuary?? I say, pay the fees, become compliant, get insurance, pay taxes, come clean and quit your whinning!!

I haven't been able to find insurance for weekend warriors....the cost is the same as if I did it full time. I was paying $223 a month and canceled it simply because I don't do enough cars to justify the cost.

:notme:
I'm too fat to turn anything :lol2:
Independent I be , Independent I stay ;)

quick story to put things in perspective...

When I moved back to NY from CA I brought my small car collection ...uhmmm 13 Classic and Muscle Cars ... I had most of them in my driveway and a few on the street. Everyday I would start them up and polish at least one or two of them. One of my neighbors complained to the town and guess who came for a visit. Town compliance officer. He said someone said I was running a detailing biz from my house. Told him they were all mine and I just like cleaning them. Nice guy and loved the cars, stayed an hour or two talking about the cars he had growing up.
Came to the bottom line ... town ordinance says you can't have that many cars on your property.
Told me I had to get a lot to store them on or sell some off ... So I got a lot near my house and put a few up for sale to pay for the lot. State guy comes by after someone complained. My guess was a threatened used car lot. State guy asked me for a dealer's license :hmmm: I said why ... state law is that if you sell more than 3 cars in a year you are a dealer. So I got a dealers license, and the insurance that went with it ... cost was outrageous:eek: , so I had to sell a couple more to pay for that.
Quick end of the story is that I had to sell them all to comply and pay all the bills ... made me understand what a real business has to go through to survive and comply and i wasn't even getting a salary :wall ...
Bottom line is if someone complains you have to have all your ducks in a row;) if no one complains then you have nice neighbors ... but you should be ready and able to comply if the need arises

No JH I don't object to someone having a hobby that makes them some spare cash, but you need not be angry if someone complains about you breaking laws that we all must live by to prevent anarchy :notme:

jumping off soap box :passout:

Nice to see you have a good attitude after such a trial Steve. I feel the biggest problem is most people feel they can do whatever they want period. And then when caught or questioned make a bigger problem than it has to be. The law is for the owner seller and everyone in between.

Most people feel if they can pay or rent they can do anything under the sun because they pay tax or rent.:fart: The payment is specific not a generalized amount for anything that comes down the pike. Life is not a Chinese buffet where you get 1 price with 100 different selections. The longer we live the clearer the details are.

Just like the new law here on dogs at the beach. Both locals and year round residents must have the dogs on a rope when on any beach public or private. This helps the many MOPES that trash around here for a few days as well as the nuns from the local convent beach side that don't want some weekender to unleash lassie on them. And the other thing is "cleaning up after Fido" after his clinkers are all spread around the sand " ANOTHER LAW FROM THE POWERFUL BRAINTRUST RUNNING THE LOCAL SHOW HERE". Some people don't get the idea others don't like standing or sitting on Landmines. Could be the state of CONN. should adopt such a rule. :notme::notme: :hmmm: :wow::rofl :rofl :lmfao:crazy2:

Call me country, cause that's where I live, out on 23 acres of what use to be a tobacco farm - sure hard to make a living on the land, so I went to work in the city. I detail on the weekends for family and friends and if they send me a customer, so be it. I use my own water out of my well and all the horrid run-off goes right in my back yard. And the grass/weeds have never looked greener. IMHO, there are too many rules and crap to put up with in town and in the burbs, I'd hate it and they'd prolly feel the same about me. So why don't I quit my day job (of 27 years), go "legit" and just work at what I love - in this economy? yeah right! Like somebody else said - I do a few cars on the side, not enough $ at this point and the people that I detail for would never consider paying out the ying-yang for a "professional" detail.

yeah the neighbor complained to me the other day for buffing my own personal boat that i had parked in the front of my condo parking lot. without a generator that was the only way to get power to the rotary machine. i was told that they wanted to tell me to move it instead of getting the HOA involved. i smiled, nodded my head, obliged the neighbor, and in my own thoughts as i was doing this i wanted to say or do something to this person that probably shouldn't be mentioned. the bad part was the fact this neighbor went on to tell me how ugly my boat is, how much of an eyesore it was, and how i just needed a house with a garage and a large yard to work on all of my "toys". well forgive me neighbor for buying an older boat (1986 Stingray Super Sport) that needs TLC and trying to give it just that, some TLC. also neighbor please forgive me for parking my boat in front of my condo and working on a beautiful diamond in the rough boat. i wonder if she is just jealous i have a boat or she genuinely dislikes me for some reason, i've never spoken more than a few words to this person before. i really don't care to speak any more words to this person.

Some people are easily annoyed by noise...think shop vacuums, extractors and buffers running for hours...when you have a job. Maybe it's something as stupid as their kid's afternoon nap is at the same time your buffer was running, and disturbed them.

Do you know who it was (or have a good guess?) You might try talking to them, taking them some cookies or even offering to do a quick polish on their car. Approach it like you would a detailing customer who wasn't satisfied and maybe you won't need the baseball bat.

If you are advertising on CL or anywhere else, though, and don't have a business license, just be glad it was code enforcement and not the state tax man. Word of mouth / cash makes it a lot easier to fly under that radar.

We have an hoa person like that. They have nothing else to do but hand out notices and watch out their window for violations...except when she wanted to have a graduation party for her kid in out cul de sac. She came to my door asking if I would agree because it all the neighbors had to agree so she could use the cul de sac (and affect our coming in and out and parking).......I flat out told her no. She got pissed and said "if you think I was a B i t c h before, if you eff this up I will be 10 times worse..." I told her A. get a hall or something because I don't want 100 drunk teenagers all over, B. is she so much as effs with me I will sell my condo at a loss and devalue the property and if she thinks I am kidding...she can call my bluff...

Guess who won that one lol

We have those around here. They want everyone to follow their rules and if not you are a bad person. We call them republicans.

true, all true it is. i had been working for less than 5 minutes on it when the neighbor actually pulled up and saw me working. but instead of parking her car in the parking spot she stopped right where she saw me working and got out and basically told me off. apparantly one of the other neighbors who moved out of their condo almost a year ago who is still trying to sell it came by to check on her place and didn't like my boat sitting out front. maybe she thought someone would not buy her place if they saw my boat out front even though i only had there for 1 week vs. her house being on the market for a year. they are right i suppose about 1 thing though, i do need to sell my condo and move to a location where i have some land, a garage, and no nosy neighbors threatening to contact the HOA on me for doing as a hobby of mine. i'm the type of person who could care less what my neighbors are doing as long as they are not putting my family's lives in danger. it's supposed to be a free country according to my grandfather who fought in WW2 so that i could detail my boat in my own neighborhood. maybe the times have changed?

do you have a garage? my neighbor complained about my xp 2 much noise so i went in the garage hot as heck ,but it solved the problem ---give him or her a free detail that might shut them up
