So, backing plates and pads

Ok, i never understood what the thing with pads is. I hear that some pads are hard, i hear some are soft, i have no clue.



What is the deal with pads?



Can someone school me on pads?



What pads does a noob want? What are some mild pads, and some heavy pads, and how do they get thrown into the equasion?



Compound wise, what are the HARSHEST compounds (or examples) that a PC would not be able to break down enough?



I can use a harsh compound without issues, correct? It will get more refined and take out finer scratches as it breaks down, correct?



As well, with backing plates, does it matter? I dont know what size backing plate can be used with what sized pad ect. I am a bit confused.
 
I use Lake country pads. I recomend the white polishing pad. For heavier work i roll with the purple foamed wool. I use the LC BP's too. I might upgrade to the 3M expenisve ones soon... who knows. It takes A LOT to break down a polish/compound with a PC. I was watching VAsupershine break some SIP (i think it was SIP) down... he moved a mm at a time with a lot of pressure. And if thats the way hes doing it, thats the way that is right. Speaking of which i havent seen him around the forum for a while.

I'm new here, so I cant give you much advice except to say, do a search for pads and backing plates. I read so much about them on this site my head hurts. TH0001 just did a review on finishing pads(a must read).



Daniel, where are you getting the 3m backing plate?
 
the harder the pad the more cut it has

soft pads are for applying glaze, wax. ect...



I think you should get a few of each foam pad

sooner or later you will need them

not sure about the purple foamed wool but regular wool pad are a no-no with the PC







HTEC has a good amount of cut and finishes down OK with the PC

most compounds require you to follow them with a finner polish to remove

micro marring that the coumpound made



also 4" pad cut much better the larger ones

Actually idk about the foamed wool with PC... i only use mine with my rotary.
