small holes in clear coat after using SMR (pic)

The magnified pictures are exaggerating the severity of the actual damage. After quick detailing my brand-new Nighthawk Black Pearl car, I didn’t see much of the pin-holing – it was scattered in with the rest of the hairline scratches and contaminates. After machine polishing a section of the hood, the “pinholesâ€ stood right out…

My guess is that the SMR took out any major defects leaving only the pinholes. With the new, softer black and non-metallic paints, there isn’t much that you can do.

If the same marks are on the glass, it may not be clear coat damage; it could be very stubborn debris - I had this problem with the 337. I thought my clear had pinholes in it, turns out it needed a good claying.

I was freaked out at first, but then I saw the same marks on all of my glass, so I clayed a section of glass and saw that the marks came off...I then clayed the entire car, really paying attention to how much I was working the paint, and the marks went away.

Now, it's still entirely possible that it's clear coat failure (my original, gut instinct), but you may want to try a good, thorough claying first.

It is possible that the shop had your vehicle in a bay while another techician sprayed something on another car's engine etc.. . I am wondering if the overspray of product etched into your paint. In which case, no amount of cleaning will take it off.

Try the clay any way. But if that fails, I think that the dealer should be told to repaint it. The SMR did not do that damage IMHO!!!

They are only on the sunroof not on any other glass and at closer inspection they are bigger then the ones in the paint.

It's not debris because under a magnify glass and moving the light I can see the indentation in the paint. After looking at the paint again the worst is on the hood- sides, roof and back have the same pits but not as bad.

Come to think of it I did have some service on the truck done back in August when I was on vacation and it was there for about 3 weeks. I'll have to look into this.

It's one of those things that if it wasn't a black truck I'd probably never have noticed it. Then again if I didn't find this site I'd probably have never noticed half of the swirls and scratches on it either:)

Thanks guys It's going in for maintenance in about a month and I'm going to have them look at it, I'll post what I find out.

A friend of mine has a black vette with the same pin holes! Acid Rain! He has been taking very, very fine sanding material and has been sanding on these holes. It has helped but it appears these holes go all the way through the clear coat so he can't sand that far down! Only noticable really in his garage under the flourescent lights. If you were to walk up to the car outside you would never notice unless you were looking for them.
