SLR and DSLR lens recommendation

I am looking for manufactures of quality lenses. Lens needs to be compatible with Canon SLR (Rebel) and DSLR (10d) bodies, zoom, wide angle and an everyday lens.



I have been told Canon and Sigma make good lenses. Any comments or advice would be helpful.

Nikor makes some good lenses. I have Tamron lenses for my Nikon N60 and have been very pleased with the sharpness of the pictures I am taking.
 
Nikor only fit nikon cameras. The best for your camera are canon but Sigma isn't bad and neither are tamron and tokina. Check out popular photography for reviews of individual models. They all make so- so and great lens depending on specs.

edschwab1-probably in the $100-500 range depending on what exactly you are looking for. I got my N60 along with a Tamron 28-80 and 75-300 lenses for about $350. The camera was a refurbished demo. By looking at it, you'd never know it had been out of the original box.

I would suggest going to a photography specific site and ask this question. Who makes the best lens for a particular application is a loaded question. All the manufacturers mentioned, Nikor, Sigma, Tamron, Cannon, etc. all make some great lenses, but at the same time at certian price points, speeds, and mm some are better than others. I have a Tamron wide angle zoom that I use with my Nikon N70, 95% of the time. After doing my research when I bought the lense I determined for the amount of money I wanted to spend it was best lense for my needs. Was there a better lense? Yes, Nikor made a faster lense with probably slightly better optics, however, it cost over 3x more than my Tamron. For the manner I use the camera it didn't make sense at the time. Also don't rule out a quality used lense. Do your research and check out a local high end camera shop.

I'm really pleased with my Tamron lenses and I think if you look through my Autopia or Photohost.org galleries you will see that it takes very sharp and clear pictures.
 
There are many sites on web. Here are a couple to get you started. But honestly I don't hang out at these on a regular basis because my father has been basically been a semi-professional photographer for the last 25 years and I usually just take his advice and the advice of his friends.



That said, here are some good starts:



http://www.photo.net/ - A big site with a lot of information spread out in the community and equipment sections. Reviews of equipment and discussions categorized by manufacturer and activity. Also has a links section.



http://www.dpreview.com/forums/ - Mostly digital camera discussions and reviews. Great for researching a new digital camera purchase



http://www.photographyreview.com/defaultcrx.aspx - Some good reviews but some are mixed with people who pretty new to photography.



You will find that in general photographers are really loyal to brands when it comes to camera bodies (which can effect lenses decisions) but generally are open to discuss various lenses (most lenses can be purchased with different mounts to work with different brand camera bodies). When you weed through the really brand loyal people you can find some really good information on equipment. Lenses are something that if purchased correctly can last forever and grow with your skills. For example one of my dad's favorite lenses is a non-auto focus Nikor that he has had for 20 years. He still claims he can get better shots with this lense than any of the latest and greatest auto focus lenses.
