Slick Marketing Tricks.....

That is so weird. Before I read the last couple of posts, I spoke with a fellow detailer and we were talking about mailing lists. He told me he just goes to upscale neighborhoods and take down addresses, etc. and mails out postcards to them. I think I might give that a shot. I figured that postcards would work better than flyers in an envelope....it's more attention getting. I'll get back with results!:xyxthumbs

My advice is dont look like a lurker or a con man, you don't want neighboors seeing you writing down addresses in your car. It really does not look that good.

Its not like I pull in their driveway ...sheeeeesh !

I simply notice, memorize the # and street, and pull over at my next convenience.....I think its a great idea/way to gain new clients.....

Instead of driving around the area, just go to your local post office and get the list of all the address in the zip code. then just add them to your mailing list.

Anyways, back on topic...

Last year I started off relatively cheap for the first 2 weeks when I came back from school. $90 any car for a full detail (inside and out), and people jumped on it.

Later I learned that I had to charge more if I wanted to get anywhere. I upped my prices, but I told the people if they let me detail their other car (wifes/husbands, etc) I'd lower the price. The people went for it 90% of the time.

When it came down to it, one was much dirtier than the other (IE: Mom's Soccer Van and Dad's Accord daily driver). It worked out in my benefit overall.

Alright Guys...I did it! I mailed out some postcards to a list of handpicked addresses from a few neighborhoods. I hope this works! I'll get back with the results.:bigups

ajbarnes, so what's the results like? With christmas round the corner, I'm also thinking of sending out christmas cards to my customers and some selected addressess... would like to hear about the response!

WHOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now, that's a brilliant idea!!! You mail out Christmas Card type postcards, and advertise a deal/special for the holiday season and also with a holiday theme on the card. Maybe even some Christmasy words and rhymes tied into the wordage of the card. I'm getting so excited about it because this may increase readership of the card due to the fact people may think it is a Christmas card from a relative or friend. Plus, most people have a warm happy feeling during this season, so that may also help with getting them to at least look at the card before throwing it away or tossing it to the side!:xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs

I've been sending out Christmas Cards for a few years now. Including a recent picture of their freshly detailed car is a nice addition.

BTW, the number one marketing trick is to do a better job than the competition. That way, your customers do your promoting to their friends. I can always tell when I have a referral because they don't ask about my services or price structure....they just want to set up an appointment! Best of all, it is completely free!

Yep. Customers are either your best or worst sales people. You do a good job and they will reward you with referrals. No cost to you either. :xyxthumbs

Ok this is what you do.

You send the customer an envelope with the message "Check Enclosed" written in the little plastic viewer thingy. Then you have a check in there for like 2 bucks.

Here's the kicker though. Somewhere on the check you write in fine print that cashing the check automatically sets the customer up for monthly complete details for which the payment will automatically be taken from their credit cards whether or not they show up for them. :D :D :D

Oops, I guess I stole that one from every large credit card company (slightly modified)... Oh well.... :nixweiss
