Those are old skool style decks. That's not what kids ride anymore... Sorry to bust in on this thread, but I still skate!

Get a complete setup - you won't be dissapointed.

And long boards aren't mean for tricks, they're meant for cruising..

PM if you have any questions.

Don't worry about busting in, looking for input from anyone willing to share :2thumbs:

Definitely going for a complete setup rather than piecing it together myself...

I do realize that a long board isn't "ideal" for tricks. I am not looking to become Tony Hawk's much older brother here :D

Thanks for the link, I will check them out...

Bob, the Sidewinder trucks are INSANE! Simply put.........They turn on a dime compared to others of high caliber, definite technology.

As for your sons board, find out about the wheels, you dont want the hard ones, look for something like what your getting, in the 70-80a range.....That Hydra looks impressive, im jealous........What do they want for it? ABout $160.00?

The Hydra is pretty expensive compared to the others, the pricing I have found so far varies from a low in the $160s to a high of $200. You can get it directly from S9 for $189 plus $12 shipping. I need to shop around to make sure I get the best price. I only saw one on eBay and it looked used.

It would appear that most of the wheels S9 offers are relatively soft. The Mini we are looking at for Josh comes with a 61mm 78a and the Hydra comes with a slightly softer wheel at 69mmx53mm 75a.

Times are changing X. You use to not be able to get "Old School" anywhere, at anytime.........Now there readily available, at least here on the west coast.......Vintage styles are returning.........

I love the Old School stuff, the boards at S9 remind me a lot of what was around when I was a kid. I don't think any of Josh's friends are into skateboarding so I am not really worried about that. I will pick his first board but, after that if he sticks with it I will let him pick whatever he wants as his skills and interest build.

I think I am pretty set on the Hydra from Sector 9 for myself but, I am still up in the air as to a board for Josh. I don't think I am going to be able to find a complete for him that he will be happy with so I think I am going to have to build it myself. He just wasn't that thrilled with any of the boards we looked at.

He has been talking about wanting a board with flames. I am thinking of just getting a naked deck and either painting it myself or having it custom painted. I am thinking a black base with old school white/yellow/orange flames.

Any advice guys as to who makes a good, durable, light, quality NAKED deck??? Keep in mind he is mainly interested in street skating/tricks as the nearest ramp is an hour away. I would also like to keep the size down to something around 8"x28", wide enough for good control yet short enough to keep it light.

Thanks

I can second CCS. When I was skating I used to get most of my boards from them. Even though your son is young, I probably wouldn't get him a really short board. CCS will have different lengths, but most standard boards are in the 30" or so range (give or take a few).

Element and Hero have been two of my favorite brands. But, pretty much anything on CCS is going to be good.

Remember that when you get him a deck, the trucks, wheels, etc... should last him a few boards.

I have been looking at CCS but another site someone was nice enough to share that I have been looking at is Utility Board Supply . They seem to have the best assortment of decks that I have seen on any site and their prices seem lower as well. Believe it or not we are still trying to decide on a deck (he is only 7 and so far has shot down almost every deck I have shown him).

I think we have finally picked a deck though, it is by Popwar...

I am going with an Alien Workshop deck.

I have decided to go in a different direction for my board than what I previously stated. I was originally going to go with a complete cruiser from Sector 9 but I decided to put together a board for myself that he could use if he should happen to break his. Eventually I am going to get an old school cruiser from Sector 9 though.

For trucks I think we are going to go with Independant Stage 9 on both boards.

I haven't really poked around enough regarding wheels, bearings and the rest of the hardware yet to make a choice...

Patrick,

Nice collection there :2thumbs: I got to thinking where would I ride a cruiser here where we live now. I should have gotten one when we lived in Orlando, I could have gone by skateboard to work every day. I think a cruiser is going to make a great second board for me. I am definitely going to get that S9 Hydra for myself before long.

Josh and I have been pouring over everything we can get hold of and have been pestering the guys at the local skate shop. I think we are close to getting everything together. To be honest I am getting excited about all of this and am not sure I can wait for Xmas myself :D

BTW, any suggestions as to bearing brands??? I am sure beginners like Josh and I probably wouldn't notice the difference between brands but, any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks

I just loaded these on my 37"er.......

62MM, 72a.....They still need some breaking in so i can get some sweet grip.......maybe bext weekend I can get some hills in, we'll see.......... :woohoo:

I ordered my son's board today..

The deck is by Popwar and we ordered Black Magic grip tape to go with it...

For trucks we are going to go with Independant Stage 9 with 1/8" risers and Independant hardware...

Wheels are 55mm, from Spitfire...

I am going to hold off on a cruiser from S9 for a while, I am going to put together a street board for myself so I can "attempt" some of the less painfull tricks with him :D I am probably going to go with all the same hardware but, an Alien Workshop deck...

Just ordered my board as well. I went with the same hardware as Josh's with the exception of black vs white Spitfire wheels and the Alien Workshop deck.

By getting the boards this early before Xmas, I may be in a position to be able to convince the wifey to let me get that S9 Hydra for Xmas :D

Good choices, I was going to give my opinion here seeing that I have been skating for 10 years now, own 6 complete boards (currently) and have been sponsored at certain points of my life. Anyways, sees like you got the perfect boards for what your son wants. The sector 9 decks are not for that. I use my sector 9 boards when I go carve down large hills in downtown San Francisco or going from class to class at school. Oh, and good choice on the bones swiss bearings, those are the best out there. Feel free to ask any questions!

well, everything came in yesterday and I put both boards together last night. Josh wanted me to do his first so the grip tape job didn't come out as well as I had hoped but, mine came out better :D It was dark last night when I finished putting them together so we didn't get much of a chance to try them out.

Kind of on the same thing, my gf and I have been trying to find some decent Inline Skates recently. We found a couple decent pairs at ****'s Sporting Goods, made by Blade Runner. I guess they are an off brand of Rollerblade. I've checked the area skate shops but no luck.
