Skateboards

Guys,

Never been much into stakeboarding myself but, my son has an interest in skating and wants a skateboard for Xmas. I have looked at places like WalMart and local shops but, I know nothing about what is out there. I want to get him a decent board that won't make the learning process more difficult by having to fight with crappy hardware.

Any hints or suggestions you all can offer would be great.

Thanks

I've had mine since I was 17, almost 30 years, I dont ride it as much as I used to, only once a year now. Only on my birthday. Skateboards have come a long way since then.

Moral of the story, get a good one and it will last.

I'll buy it, seriously. We're roughly the same generation...I have been trying to buy old school boards for sometime on the web but havent had much luck......

Bob, without hesitation, shop online or run to a local skate/surf shop/ I was just looking at some retro old school boards tonight with my son at the surff shop, and am about to make a purchase again. My current stick is 41", with 52/76 wheels........But what I would give for something similiar to 31", with some OJ's or Road Ryders, or even Kryptonics, 5.75" trucks oh man I could go on and on!!!

Bob, ask him if he wants to do tricks/flips or carve/cruise.........Thats a good starting point....These are some of the best boards on the planet Bob.........

go to a local skate shop and ask questions.......stay away from Wal-Mart/Target or sporting goods stores!

i used to skate from age 11-17, been outta that scene for about 5 years now so not sure what is good or big anymore but a few brands to try and find would be Earth, Independant, Birdhouse, Flip, and World Industries just to name a few....

hope this helps!

agreed. do not waste your $$$ on anything at walmart, etc... the bearings alone in those boards will detour you away, as they don't roll worth a damn...

Thanks guys :2thumbs: Patrick that site looks great, those boards look awesome. My son wants to do tricks/flips and I think I may also get one and learn with him although I will probably lean towards the carve/cruise side ;) He hasn't shown a lot of interest in sports so when he mentioned this I thought it would be a great way for us to spend more time together although I have to admit skateboarding wouldn't have been something I would have picked myself :chuckle:

Bob, heres a good site for short boards....... Theres some real good deals on Ebay also...........

Thanks again, there are a lot of boards to chose from there. I went from not much to chose from to an almost overwhelming variety there :D I will pour over them tomorrow and maybe pick a few and get some more feedback.

Josh's experience with skating so far has been limited to Heelys but, he picked that up pretty fast so I expect he will probably pick this up faster than I will :o

You may consider wrist and knee protection too...........At least in the beginning. I still have ummmmmm, street stuff, in my left knee area.....from over 30 yrs ago.......(Yeah, Im an O.F., old ****)

Definitely, we purchased knee, elbow and wrist protection as well as a good helmet for Josh when he started with the Heelys. I will be getting the same.

I have been looking at the Sector Nine boards and I think I have these two narrowed down.

For Josh I wanted something small and maneuverable that would be easy for him to handle. There is a skate park about an hour from where we live but, I think he will most likely be doing street tricks rather than ramps/vert stuff. A Mini seemed perfect for him to start out on.

For myself I am having a bit harder of a time chosing. I want a cruiser as I don't think these old bones can take a lot of tricks but I would like to be able to do a few simpler tricks with him. There don't seem to be a lot of boards suited to both tasks??? I am leaning towards the Cosmic 1??? I also like the looks of the longer Cosmic 2 but I figured the shorter board would be a better compromise.

I would appreciate your thoughts/suggestions on my choices..

Just remember, the longer the more stable........Anything under 30" is good for tricks, anything up to about 38"-40" is nice for carving, over 40" is good for cruising, but you lose maneauverability (Response time is slowed down) kind of like the difference between a ricer and a truck.............

You'll be very happy with S9 though, stand up company and products.........

Another point of interest, soft wheels (70-80a) are quieter, and provide a softer, smoother ride, they also grip better and can take roadway/sidewalk debris better. The hard wheels suck!! Crusiers come with soft wheels, but keep an eye on the short stick, and ask ?'s....

I don't think I mentioned it but Josh is 7 years old (8 in February) which is why I was looking at the S9 Mini series. Do you think at his age he could handle a board closer to 30" as that would open up the choices a bit???

Even though Sector 9 is known for its longboards, we've mixed it up and taken things in the other direction. The Mentawii Mini is the shortest Sector 9 board measuring in at 26.5" long by 7.5" wide, but don't let the size fool you. This is a fully functioning skateboard manufactured to the highest standards at Sector 9. These little suckers can handle all you can throw at them. From kick flips to carving and even ramps, the Mentawii Mini is a fun addition to any quiver of boards. The Mentawii Mini has a concave deck with a kick in the tail. It comes set up with 8 3/8" Gullwining Mission Trucks, 61mm Nineball wheels, Greaseball Abec 5 bearings, mini risers, hardware and grip tape.

right now I am imagining mid 40 year old guys on skate boards at my local skate park.. Thats awesome.

I can see myself falling and its not good, even though I can still ride on my hands. In which I only do once a year on my birthday, just to see if I can still do it.

Bob, the Sidewinder trucks are INSANE! Simply put.........They turn on a dime compared to others of high caliber, definite technology.

As for your sons board, find out about the wheels, you dont want the hard ones, look for something like what your getting, in the 70-80a range.....That Hydra looks impressive, im jealous........What do they want for it? ABout $160.00?

Those are old skool style decks. That's not what kids ride anymore... Sorry to bust in on this thread, but I still skate!

Check out

www.ccs.com

Get a complete setup - you won't be dissapointed.

And long boards aren't mean for tricks, they're meant for cruising..

PM if you have any questions.

Times are changing X. You use to not be able to get "Old School" anywhere, at anytime.........Now there readily available, at least here on the west coast.......Vintage styles are returning.........
