SILVERSTARS and night driving?

Has anyone noticed that these bulbs don't seem to illuminate much in the rain? I'm pretty sure my stock bulbs allowed me to see the road stripes when I drove in the rain at night, but now it's like I don't even have my headlights on.

That is very common. Especially with HIDS. Granted u did things the right way and didn't get some high kelvin rated HID setup, you notice that your visibilty in normal night weather almost tripled. But u also notice that rain, snow, ect are actually harder.

I could give a LONG explanation, but basically, foglights with a regular halogen bulb seem to be good for bad weather.

It pretty much has to do with the blue end of the light spectrum getting refracted more then the yellow to red end. Foglights are suppose to be yellow to be more effective in bad weather.

I have no problem seeing in the rain with my SilverStars. I bought some H1 Fogs yesterday, we'll see how they do in the rain as well.

I had the Silverstars in my last car and loved them! They were 100 times better than stock halogens. Maybe some people just have a harder time driving in the rain and poor conditions.

Me too, Ive put them on several cars, and insisted my dad put them on his truck. Im waiting for them to make an H11 for my 4 Runner!

Had the SilverStars in my car.

Now I have Hella's and there a huge improvement over SilverStars. Great in the rain as well. I found the silverstars just illuminated an area around the front of the car, but the Hella's seem to focus much more on just straight right infront of the car and are brighter as well.

How long have you guys been using those Silverstars? I heard a lot of stories about them only lasting 6 or so months so I decided to go against them.

Sorry to threadjack a bit, but I just want to offer up a bit of my experience...I got some MTEC Cosmos Blue bulbs in H4 after hearing that they didn't just look good, but also performed well also, not to mention they come with a lifetime warranty. Well, I got'em and sure enough, they look pretty nice, they're a bit too blue for my taste, but they're better than yellow bulbs. They lit things up well, especially compared to stock, but I had the nightmare of driving through a heavy storm last week and well, I literally might as well have been driving with my headlights off. I actually (and dangerously) flipped'em off really quick to see if I noticed a difference, and man...it was bad.

But lesson learned, the main reason why blue tinted bulbs suck in the rain is because of the loss of that specific part of the color spectrum which is why yellow fogs and whatnot perform better. The only reason HID's increase vision is because they're just so much more powerful than regular Halogen bulbs.

So I guess unless you do an HID conversion...you've got to weight out safety and performance against aesthetics. :(

I had silverstars in mine, then switched out to the sylvania Cool Blues. the cool blues seem to light up MUCH better in the dark than the silverstars

Damn...I was going to start looking for a set for my 4-Runner!

As far as durability...I had mine in my car for a year and a half and they were still good the day I traded my car in.

The Silverstars look amazing for probably 7-8 months and then they start to yellow. The bulbs themselves last a while, but they crisp white light you want doesn't go as long.

Same thing happens with the GE Reveal lights I use. When they're first in, everything looks brighter & cleaner in the colors. But after a few months they turn really yellow and it becomes dimmer.

Honestly I have never had that problem either...I guess its just like any detailing product, everyone has their favorites. I guess even if a few of these things happen with the Silverstars they are still much cheaper than any PIAA or equivalent.

The Silverstars have a much shorter life according to Sylvania...for 9006 bulbs..the Standard Halogen is rated for 1000 hours, the Longlife for 1500 and the Silverstar 150.

My Osram Silverstars have worked flawlessly for more than a year now. In addition, since the bulb is not tinted, the color of the light doesn't appear to have changed. I can see a big difference at night if I pull up to another person with H4 bulbs at QT (huge convienence/gas store) and both sets of headlights are shining on the wall. Noticably whiter and brighter.

I had a bunch of different pairs of "colored bulbs" made to produce more light and mimic the HID look. From the cheap no-name, high wattage colored bulb to a nice pair of PIAA; there performance we're all lacking for lack of a better of words, especially in the rain.

Right before I sold my truck I put my stock lights in, and even though it was a little more "yellow", the light output was way better then any of those "colored bulbs".

hmm in Canada Silverstars are made my Sylvania

but out options for coloured bulbs are

Sylvania silverstars

Sylvania Cool Blue

GE Nighthawks

PIAA

the thing is that the PIAAs are cheaper than the Silverstars, they cost about the same as the Nighthawks
