silicone in wax penetrates down to bare metal?

I thought silicone in wax just sits on top so that I can just clean it before paint touch up.

According to Haynes Automotive Body Repair & Painting Manual, however, silicone can penetrate to the bare metal. Which wax products on the market has silicone that penetrates down to the bare metal?

“Also on the market are a variety of synthetic waxes, most of which are silicone based. They work well, but have a couple of drawbacks. They tend to dull if you put too much on (or apply second coats without thoroughly washing off the first coat), and they can make future repainting, touch up or spot painting a repaired area a real hassle, since the new paint will not stick to a surface which has any trace of silicone on it. And the silicone penetrates all the paint layers, even the primer, right down to bare metal!

A good body shop knows how to properly prep paint so any silicones in the protectants you have used will not cause a problem.

wow, and i tested out some TW-ICE on my dad's truck. However applying the ICE reminded me of rubbing baby oil on my GF back in high school...lol

When I do touch up, I wipe with a pain prep wipe sold at Autozone ($0.99 pre-moistened wipe).

I do about 10 sweep with the wipe. Then, while the area is still wet with the solvent cleaner, I wipe off with clean towel.

But if the silicone has penetrated down to bare metal, the cleaner in the wipe should also penetrated down to bare metal in such a short time?

This is too funny. I've had that same manual for many years. Last night I was bored looking for something to read (with pictures of cars) so picked this book up and read this very same passage. Then I come here and see this thread.

Then I checked to see how old the book was (1989). A lot has happened in 16 years and now a good body shops preps every car to be painted as if it was treated with silicone. It's like smart healthcare workers treating every patient as if they were HIV+

They are generalizing silicones I believe. Many many wax products contain silicones, in many forms. Not all silicones are harmful. Dimethyl silicone oils are the nasty type that you should stay away from.
