Should I get a Random Orbital?

Just wanted to say I was in the exact same position as you, had a Makita I had been using for years and loved it. I picked up a GG 6" at the start of the summer and I think it was a good decision. I still polish with my Makita, do some compounding with the DA but mostly use it for applying a sealant. However, there are situations where it is almost necessary, for instance on sticky paint, you pretty much need it. It keeps the heat levels WAY down under a rotary so it's pretty nice for doing plastic bumpers too.

Overall it's very useful and a nice machine.

Well, technically speaking you can use the same backing plates if you buy an adapter:

D.A Adapter 5/8" X 11

I'm leery of those adaptors, worried that the kinda-weird stresses of a RO might cause breakage. OK, maybe I'm worrying for nothing, but I'd sure hate to have a broken steel stud spinning around if it did happen.

I've used one a few times actually, and it seems ok.... but you do make a good point.

Yeah, mine (forget what it came with...) seems nice and sturdy and it's not all *that* different from other spindle setups, but I can't help but think that "it'll be OK, right up until it's not" ya know?

Kinda like the Edge adaptor for my Flex 3401 that's just sitting there looking fragile to my eyes.

I just got a 20% coupon code from autogeek. Does that apply to the GG6?

Also, how small of a backing plate can you mount onto this unit?

Can't help with the coupon, sometimes polishers are exempt from such discounts.

I have a little backing plate from Meguiar's that lets me use 3" pads on the Griot's, and a slightly larger one for 4" pads.

if i'm not mistaken, polishers/buffers are excluded. in anycase.. buy the GG6 direct from griots, they have free shipping right now...

Dual action is a must these days. I don't have the New G110V2 and never played with it. I played with every other one. From my experiance.

Porter Cable 7424xp Piece of Crap. Worst machine ever.

Griots Machine. Incredible when they actually work. I was a big fan of these for a long time, but at my shop we couldn't get 3 weeks out of one. Went threw seven of them in like 2 months.

Shurehold Polisher. Virtually the same thing has Griots, but for some reason we are going strong on like 10 months now and solid. It gets used on roughly 50 -60 cars a week and used hard. This machine is built to last. In my eyes its the only true Dual Action Industrial Machine!

Barry, you really have got to get your hands on a G110v2... they're built very well IME. Sure, some have had cord issues but replacing that is easy if you do have a problem.

All joking aside, that's good to know! Maybe I oughta consider one of those if I decide I really do need a backup for my Griot's  I will say that my Griot's didn't enjoy being dropped a few times :o
