Shipping things to Canada and overseas.

First off I have never shipped anything to Canada or overseas.

Is there anything I should be aware of when doing this or is it just like shipping things inside the USA? I have no idea!

As long as it's not aerosol, you should be fine. Don't overstate the value on the declaration (you need to officially declare what you are sending), as the recipient will be charged taxes/duties based on the stated value.

You can go to the post office and pick up a pamphlet on what is allowed to be sent via the post office, or you can go online and read up. There always seems to be some exceptions, so it's better to be sure than to guess/assume. Different countries also have different regulations.

If you send via other means than the post office, the recipient will be charged a brokerage fee by the shipping company. It seems to be around $20-$30 for UPS and FedEx, even if the item is only $5.00.

I would also recommend you require a signature receipt so you can tell when the package arrived. Also, look at getting some sort of tracking. I've had some packages arrive in less than 2 weeks and others that took over 2 months. Both from the same state.

Thanks a lot for the information. You have made it easy.

For my business, I sent stuff overseas and Canada on almost a daily basis.

Use USPS Global Priority Mail. Up to about 4 pounds. Cheap, and it's fast. And free boxes, too.

UPS and FEDEX are EXPENSIVE and SLOW by comparison. And they DESTROY stuff.

I have never had a package destroyed or lost due to Global Priority Mail. But via FEXED and United Parcel Smarshers, I've lost doezens.

USPS is best for the receiver, if that means anything to you. Fedex and UPS will charge duty and usually a brokerage fee. USPS may charge duty, but will not charge brokerage.

I agree, I always look for USPS. I'm not big on getting charged for fees on top of fees and the fee for the fee fee. Yes I live in Canada hahahaha.

After all this, I have another idea. I'm not shipping overseas or to Canada! just not worth the hassle.

Thanks guys for all the information, I think you saved me a lot of hassle.

PS. I order a lot of things and 80% of the time it's UPS that delivers. I have never had a bad delivery from them relative to package trouble , lost, or anything. I should mention that I have got to know the delivery guy for my area (since I order so much) and he really is a great guy. FEDX, well that's another story.

Change, you can ship a small package to Canada (must be under 4lbs) for $11.50 and it gets there within a few days. (See "USPS Global Priority Mail)
