Shiny dash

Did exactly what Rad21 prescribed... The damp MF towel removed the gloss and the 303 went on without adding any of its own. This was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

I applied some to the leather trim (door handles/arm rest), but wondered how effective this is. Doesn't leather need more than just a UV protectant like 303?

I'm glad it worked for you Wes. Maybe some other autopians can chime in regarding the leather trim.:)

I noticed that 303 does make the dash more reflective. The original state of my Acura TL's dash was perfectly matte. Actually a little too matte for my taste. However, I never had reflections or glare in the windshield. With 303 the dash has a nice glow bute there are reflection or glare in the windshield. I keep a black hand towel in the map pocket. If if gets too bad, I just lay the hand towel on the dash. The glow I get on the rest of the leather, pleather and plastic is very nice. It's funny though, the dash in my wife's Pathfinder does produce glare. It's much shallower dash and is grey instead of black. I'll live with this little problem.

I would be concerned about wiping down the dash with a wet cloth after 303. Isn't 303 water soluable? Perhaps try applying less 303 or letting it dwell a shorter period of time on the dash. Diluting it, like recommend by TortoiseAWD, might work also. Though, I have a feeling you would dilute the protection also.

Unfortunately your leather trim might be vinyl rather than leather.

While I can't speak for too many cars, I do know that the four cars I have owned with "leather" interior had leather seating areas and vinyl on seat backs, arm rests, door panels. All were Domestic brands, though. I think it is quite common for GM to use lots of vinyl with their so called leather interiors.

If you still have your sales brochure, take a peek at it. If it sayes leather seating surfaces or leathered trimed, there's vinyl in them there seats. In reality, only expensive, high end car have all leather seat or interiors. Some time you can tell what is what by pressing a finger into the material. If get lots of wrinkles around your finger its leather, if not, its vinyl. This doesn't always work.

The car I'm referring to is the 50th Anniversary Corvette and, yes, it says "leather seating surfaces"... but the literature also points to a leather boot surrounding the shifter, as well as special leather door handles and leather arm rests. Typically, Corvettes don't have this much leather, but GM threw a bit more in for this edition.

So... back to my original question: Is an application of 303 adequate, or should I be feeding this leather something else?

Wes

Your leather on you Vette and G35 are "clear coated". They have a coating on them that makes them last but it acts a lot like vinyl. So, what I plan is 2 times a year a good leather conditioner (I have Leatherique. I got it for our badly worn couch. It worked great! Lexol is also spoken frequently and highly of.). Then 303 as needed. Probably another 2 - 4 times a year or when the shine or glow wears off. 303 MAYBE enough. I figured a little Leatherique or Lexol could not hurt. I have heard, here and other forums, that too much leather conditioner can damage or remove the clear coating. Lexol can be purchased many places (shoe repair, REI, sporting goods).
