Shadow marks?

Hi all, Someone in the polishing forum mentioned that the an orbital buffer can be good for removing shadow marks after waxing. I think that s what I've got on the hood of our old Bimmer. I can see the circular application marks. Is this shadowmarks? Is shadowmarks a term many of you use? These are life's greatest questions....... :wall

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean, but from the sound of it, you can see where the wax was applied? Like the wax streaked? What wax did you use? Is it possible you used too much product?

What year of bemmer?

Have you had any detailing done on this car like someone with a rotary?

Any chances of pics?

Sorry for all the questions like Jared I'm nor clear on what you are saying.

Uneven application or removal of paint protectant will leave areas that are darker (shadow). It will pattern however you applied or removed product. If you take a clean dry towel and can buff a small section and they go away then a cheapy terry or MF orbital bonnet will just speed it up. QDs will sometimes work. Some products especially by hand on dark colored cars can be a pain in this area. Find a better matched product, use a buffer or live with it till the next wash. If they will not buff out then you probably had a finish with some oxidation or haze and didn't work the product enough when you put it on. I'm sure they are called other things but that was what I was told. Using a product made for the sun helps too. (poorboys)

Yeah its a little wierd and I've never had this problem before. It was my first test with natties. The finish is by no means prefect but not oxidized. I removed most of the swirls but there are tons of little pits in the paint. Basically its darker black application marks from the wax. Buffing didn't fix it (w/ pc and by hand). I've got pics of the car but you really can't see the marks in the pics. And its a 83 BMW 320i.
The natties looks great on my land cruiser though!

The streaking, or smearing, or "Shadow marks" as you call it are usually caused by one of two things... applying the product too heavy and therefore attempting to remove the product that isn't ready to be removed. The second cause can be "moisture" trapped between the paint and the product you are applying.

Hope this helps.

My friend tried P21s for the first time it streak like crazy (he put it on way too thick) I went over it with a light coat of YCW and it look perfect. I'm not really sure if the YCW removed any of the P21s but it sure looked great, very deep and reflective.
