SG Multiple Coats

Has anybody gone really nuts with multiple coats of SG? I have 3 on my Touareg now with 8 coats on the hood and front bumper.

Is there a point of diminishing returns?

What have your experiences been with using many coats of SG?

The first person that comes to mind is Accumulator, since I seem to remember him using 6 coats on a regular basis and experimented with more.

right now i have 3 coats of fmj on my car, and i plan on putting 8-10 coats of klasse on top of the fmj, and then topping with 2-3 coats of p21s... crazy right?

Not crazy! My mom says I am obsessed, I call it a hobby.

I usually try for a coat a week

That sounds like a great way to maintain excellent protection. Right now that's why I'm holding off from using a wax topper.

I wonder how deep SG can actually be layered? If you used a hundred coats would that equal a small percentage of the depth of the clear coat?

I see that some folks recommend wiping off the SG then waiting from a day to a week before applying another coat so that the SG can cure. Does this have any real measurable effect? How could you tell?

I am not sure how you could tell to be honest. I always like to wait a day or so when I start out. I put a layer per day on Fri, Sat, Sun (when sterting fresh) and then a layer per week after that. Only takes about an hour including a car wash.

I have the remainder of 15 coats, most areas on the hood in particular no longer that many from consistently fighting micromarring. I'm going to be topping with Souveran via spit shine method.

Bill how's the finish with 15 coats? Is it noticably different than 3 coats?

So the micro marring is within the sealant coat?

Nope, the extra 12 just for pure fun. The Souveran, I take it, is going to make it "deeper looking"

Well I put two more on the hood and one more coat of SG on the rest of the Touareg. Something I noticed on the hood was that although it looked great it wasn't super smooth anymore.

Yesterday I clayed my wife's Suburban hood, applied AIO with the PC and put one coat of SG on by hand. After that the Suburban's hood was smoother than the Touaregs with 10 coats of SG.

I know the protection on the Touareg is superior, but I do like that smooooth feel. So I decided to do a wax topper. Believe it or not this is the first time I've ever put a wax topper over Klasse.

The wax I used was 3M's Show Car Paste Wax. I used three coats on the hood and the results were very pleasing. The wax topper delivered the desired results and made the hood significantly smoother. It also appears a degree wetter in subdued evening light.

The 3M wax has historically been really good at giving a wet look for me, although in the past I've used it over Meguiar's Show Car Glaze #7. I wasn't sure if it would perform as well directly over the SG, but initial appearance, in subdued light, looks great.

I put down a coat of wax on the front quarters after the hood, but I'm holding off on the rest of the vehicle so that I can compare the sides of the front quarters next to the front doors in direct sunlight.

With multiple layers of SG (yeah, I had 6 or so on the MPV) you really can get micromarring that is only in the SG. When I went to redo it last year I tried some AIO on a few spots that had fine marring (note that Mazda paint is far too hard for AIO to abrade) and the marring came right out. I only had to actually polish a few small areas and those only needed PI-III MG. That was after a year of beater car duty and washes with a BHB.

So far this year I've only redone the hatch. I used some alcohol to clean a few spots and the finest of the marring came out as the remaining SG was removed. Still had to polish it this time, though (05933 then 05937, both by Cyclo) but that's only twice since we got it.

Somebody whose name escapes me (had a Toyota truck, no longer posts here :( ) had a *lot* of layers of SG and he hardly *ever* got any marring of any kind, even from bird bombs.

Just gotta watch that you don't seal in some contamination when you do the layering. If in doubt, spot clay *very* gently (just enough to pull contamination out of the SG).

Unfortunately only happened to me once, now all marring I detect is in the clear, and that's with what was once up to 15 layers of SG :(

Heh heh, well... [Accumulator contemplates posting some smart-aleck quip about washing technique ;) :D ] Maybe you won't have to worry about such stuff as often now that you have the showerfoam gun.

Hey Accu!

Do you ever use that shower foam gun with QEW??

Would you mind posting the link again please. Might have to pass that off to the BF as a cough cough x-mas present

Last winter I had over 20 layers of SG on the Car. I stopped seeing a difference after the 4th or 5th layer. I don't know if you can actually have 20 layers on there but if I did it didn't look any different than 5.

I am in the middle of doing my winter prep now and am on the 2nd layer. I plan on 5 than adding as needed and as the weather permits.

I usually wash with QEW in the winter and I know QEW leaves something behind on the paint. Feels very slick and looks very shiny. I think this was a problem with SG bonding. I noticed that a fresh coat of SG applied after a QEW wash doesn't seem to keep it's look and feel very long. Anybody else notice this? I think I will top my SG with #16 this winter when I QEW wash. If I do this that will be the end for the SG layering.

Yep, totally agree

There comes to point that you need to restart it with AIO to remove all the old layers and start fresh again. That's what I did yesterday on my TT after having 8 coats on it!
