SFX pads and AIO

Hi,

I just got my SFX pad kit in the mail today. I read that I should use the White pad (#2) with something like AIO, a cleaner.

Well, it really didn't come out any better than my DAS Orange/Green pads with the PC. Still some 'oxidation lines' - slight lines where I can see where I went with the pads, slightly mind you. And no clearer.

Is this from: #1 Not taking enough time (I spent between 1 and 2 min. per 2x2 section. The speed was set on the recommended 3.)

#2 Not enough product or too much

The paint is old and oxidized but there is quite a bit of shine on the entire car now. Just not as *Clear* as I'd like it to be. Still some haze in the paint, oxidation that won't/hasn't come out yet..........

Recommendations?

Would I need something more powerfull? Stronger Oxidation Cleaner, Pads etc.? The Yellow SFX pad didn't seem to do anything but mar the paint.

Should I use the SFX polishes exclusively? Do you think they will be *That Much Better*??

Also, how many times can you use AIO on the entire car safely before you should stop..... This is a single stage paint.

I just want the *Clarity* back in the paint, not the paint worn down, and I'm willing to use as much AIO as needed to get the car 'back.'

thanks.

I do know the SFX pads CAN cause you problems. IF you run them too fast you WILL get marring....even at the recommended maximum speeds I got bad marring!!! I do not like these pads at all. Maybe I'm not "good enough" to use them, but I wouldn't use them again unless I'm SSR3 on a hopeless paint job! They might work OK with the Sonus polishes they were designed for, but I don't know. I cannot stress how bad I dislike those pads.

AIO IS NOT GOING TO GET RID OF THE MARRING THEY CREATED, if it was the pads and not your technique that caused the marring.

It's not clear to me just what your problem is. Heavy oxidation means you need a stronger product then AIO, I think.

I will offer this: Use your orange pad with DACP or SSR2.5 and run it on 5-6 slowly in a 3x3 area until the product starts to dust up pretty good. Too little worked is bad...too much not good either. Just let it dust up enough to know it's broken down well.

(Do some searches.) You will probably need another polish after the DACP or SSR2.5 and use a polishing pad. AIO is more a chemical cleanser and protectant. In my opinion someting for new cars and finishes in good condition just before waxing, etc.

Not ment to level down paint. Hope you get some more help. Good luck.

I agree with MartyGrant, but you may want to try SSR1 before going to SSR2.5. The rule of the thumb is to always try the less aggresive first then work your way up.

thanks guys. The SFX pads are harder to work with but I'll give it a shot. I think I like the DAS pads better, tho.

BTW, most if not all of the scratches and swirl marks seemed to be in the oxidation I removed already. So I don't think that I'll be ssr'ing it this time around, just straight to lsp.

The AIO isn't really suited to remove a lot of oxidation.

You would need a polish like SFX-1 or Autoglym paint rejuvenation.

Then polish with the SFX-2 or Meg.#83, then final polish before the AIO would be SFX-3 or P21S or Sonus paint work cleanser.

THEN add the AIO.

The SFX pads are better at working polishes as they don't have as much "give" to them.

How do you know your marring was caused by the foam and not the abrasive polish you use?

Your comments are emphatic and suggest that you have done tests to conclude that foam causes swirls/marring and not the polish. I would like to see these tests.

In the tests I conducted with foam pads, only the most coarse cutting pad foam left "scouring" on paint when run on a wet (plain water) paint surface using both a rotary (750 RPM) and a dual-action (2400 OPM) polisher. I ran these tests using a range of foams from the three larest foam pad manufaturers.

If you have other tests, I would like to see the data.

I am still learning how best to use the Sonus SFX pads and polish but I have not encountered any problems so far. I find them easy to use and very effective.

From my experience, the SFX pads are the very good (when used in conjunction with a mechanical abrasive) at removing/correcting paint blemishes. Iâ€â„¢m with Jonw440 on this one - it seems your oxidation issue goes beyond the chemical capabilities of AIO . . . try something with more bite, like DACP, IP, or SFX. Your finish should be clear and glossy. Good luck :xyxthumbs

Marty â€â€œ any chance your pad/surface was loaded with debris or residue? Was the surface too hot or dry? Did you prime the pad with a little QD spray? Iâ€â„¢ve used the SFX Restore pad with some really gritty compounds without inducing any marring or swirling.
