Serious challenge. Volvo wagon in bad shape

Alright. I don't post much here becaue work schedule, stuff like that. And I'm not a serious detailer...

But I figure I'll keep you guys updated on this little project I'm considering taking on.

We had some new neightbors move in last week. Nice people. Car is in baaaaaad shape paint-wise.

It's a Volvo station wagon. Clear coat looks like it's been baked off, and then turned white in places where it still remains.

Grit so deep in the paint that clay bar won't take it out. I tried. Going nowhere.

I figure I'll help the guy and teach him what I know over the next few weeks, and work on his car as time permits and see what we can do to get it looking better.

I'm thinking block sand the remaining clear coat completely off the hood and top where it's the worst, then polish, then some serious wax treatment.

Here's a few pics to show you guys what I'm up against.

Mind you, I'm no detailer by any means. But I do take pretty good care of my cars, and know enough to take care of already decent paint.

You can see some polish haze left the the PC in the middle picture during some very light work to show the owner that the paint MIGHT be salvageable. Seriously, the clay bar was NOT lifting anything out, so I figured PC might be the best best. And it worked...a little. There was a definate improvement after our 20 minutes....but no chage to the clearcoat.

Any tips for a n00b when it come to difficult stuff like this?

repaint?? that looks like clear peeling off

Yep, it is. The sides of the car seem to be OK, it's only on the top so far as I can tell. You can chip it off with your fingernail. Flakes right off.

I don't think they want to repaint....

I consider myself warned :woohoo:

A razor blade was one of my first thoughts, too. Rounding over the corners so it doesn't scratch the paint.

I have a very, very deft hand when it comes to doing stuff like this. I used to be a guitar builder, so I do know a bit about paint and polishing, and using razor blades to remove micro-amounts of material.

The paint itself looks like it's OK. We shall see.

I figure at the very least, I probably can't f'it up any more than it already is, and it'll give me some hardcore practice....

It looks like it was re-clearcoted (painters sometimes do it, when they're not repainting the whole panel - they respray the damaged area with paint, and then clearcoat the whole panel, so there is no transition visible). It looks like the resprayed clearcoat was crappy...

I don't imagine how would you remove that dead cc, I think only the respray would help...
