Sema This!!

well if you're new to the show car scene, there are different levels of cars at shows. there are 20ft cars meaning they look good 20 feet away, 5 ft, 2 ft and then the ridler type cars that are gone over with a fine tooth comb and magnifying glass. most car builders struggle to complete cars with in time and with money budgets. trust me i have helped build a few SEMA cars and trucks and some aint very pretty but they show case the products and thats all that they care about. last year i even offered to help out a guy finish color sanding his car and his answer: naw its only the top and we just made the body kit. i was blown away, i was gonna do it in trade for some room on his build board. most show cars are really badly built and wouldnt stand up well to every day driving.

It's a shame! Unfortunately, I guess (to the novice), a shiny car is a beautiful car.

But...I know many shiny cars that are swirled, too. Apparently Mothers was giving out their awards only for "shine", and not for "Shiny and defect-free finish".

Err, actually I can't get the words to come out right . Anyone know what I'm getting at?

LOL yeah i get it. but shiny sells products. most regular people wouldnt know the difference anyway or the detailers on these type of forums would be so busy no one would have time to post

Exactly! Which is why I intend to go to this month's Cars and Coffee in Plano (near Dallas) and troll for business. 3 of the vehicles I did towards the end of last month went to that event, total of 500 cars.

Cars and Coffee™ Dallas

I got a few clients from the Cars and Coffee in Cleveland this past summer. Some of them are local sports stars which is pretty cool. Great group of enthusiasts, many of which do not have the time or know-how to take care of their expensive hobbies.

Having been to SEMA, in my humble opinion, the expo offers little for the professional detailer. Certainly not enough to justify the travel (and associated) costs.

Makes it a great marketing opportunity, especially if some of your customers are there and can vouch for your work.

Bence where are you?? You guys should see some of the stuff that Bence has shown me... catastrophic. Here's a Brabus Maybach... pfft.

That is not a showready car, not by far. I saw something like that at a show here in Sweden and that car was on display at AutoSmart. The owner almost killed me when I asked if they where gona detail it live at the show :D

That obvious level of orange peel makes me cry inside.

Seems like most people, not even detailers understand what swirls are, they think it's normal..As long as it's shiny it's enough.

If any of you are in Vegas go to the Hard Rock Casino. The car at the main entrance (Don't remember what it was, but remember looking it over) has some serious water etching and RIDS, but catching the right light is a pain since it's dimly lit right there.
