Selling business? How-to?

In about 5 months I'm going to be moving. That means that something has to be done with my mobile business. I originally built it to serve as a part time job to fill weekends. Over the past 4 years, it has exploded into nearly a full time business.... although sometimes it can still be slow. I have gotten to know many of my clients on a very personal basis and they are starting to get afraid of what will happen when I leave. There is nobody else in the area that operates like I do. I don't know of anyone who I can train into the business and would be willing to buy it out and continue on operating like I do.

I would like, at the very least, to sell my client list to someone who take over all the accounts. At most, my phone number and business name along with the list. I'm mobile, so I don't have a location to sell. I'd like to hold onto my equipment, as I'll be moving to a much higher income market and I may start another detailing business....however the job I'm looking to take is more than full time and would make much, much more then detailing.

Who has done something like this before? How do I go about selling the business and how much is it worth? I did a search and found a thread saying that my client list is worth 1/2 what I make from it, each year. Is that accurate?

Where do I advertise the business and would it be out of the question to call some of my competitors (even in neighboring markets that may want to break into mine) and see if they might be interested?

Thanks for your insight!

You will be hard pressed to sell your client list. They will find someone else, and since they're used to dealing with YOU, another detailer will probably not satisfy their needs. It's not just about the good work that you do, but also your personal relationship with your clients.

You'd probably have to work with whoever you'd sell your client list to so you can properly introduce them to your customers and show them the level of work your customers have come to expect.

Can you provide proof of your sales? If so $5000-$10,000 tops. If that. Proably alot less. I'd reach out to other mobile detailers in your area. Good luck. It's alot easier selling a fixed detailing shop than it is a mobile one. Put an ad on Craig's List.
