I just stumbled across this about the new Infiniti EX35 for 2008.



Self-healing paint



The EX comes standard with Nissan's new "fluid finish" technology. The specialized paint has been tested in Japan on the X-Trail crossover, but the launch of the EX marks the first time the technology will be available in America.



Minor scratches in the clearcoat will disappear in hours or days thanks to an elastic resin that flows back into shape after being damaged.

2008 Infiniti EX35 revealed
 
nissans self levelling paint, run a search on it. very strange but interesting. my main concern is how does it level itself without bringing contamination into the paint system itself.
 
Yeah, this was brought up a year or so ago. Should cut down on detailing time and should be interesting to work with. Can you leave buffer trails on something like this? Should it even be buffed?

I’ve never heard of either Nissan or Nippon Paint (the company that actually makes the paint) ever actually explaining how their coatings work.



Bayer in Germany also makes self-healing coatings. But they actually did publish a simplified description of the science behind the shine.

From Bayer’s descriptions of their coatings they don’t really flow in the sense that water or air flows. It’s more like they relax internal stresses that give shape to the deformations. So it won’t swallow up dirt like a wet film does.



Nippon Paints’ coatings may or may not work in similar fashion.

Good to hear! We had a post about a similar 3M technology over a year ago, I believe, but strangely (or not... I don't think its a coincidence good technologies in development suddenly disappear) all news and development seem to have disappeared.



Good to see something is finally coming to market.
