Self Employment Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance

For those of you that run your own business, can you share what you do for Medical, Dental, Vision insurance?

I detail for a hobby, but I just changed jobs where my new company provides medical insurance and a discount program for Dental and Vision. The medical is actually with the same insurer (UHC) that I had before, but since my new company is smaller, the rate is a little more expensive. I would be interested to hear what options are out there for individual/family Dental and Vision coverage.

Thanks in advance.

I wish I had a good reply for this one- but I also am interested in what insurance any of you use. I have been detailing for quite some time but just opened my business in July and need some input on that as well!

Thanks

Zac

Or an insurance broker.

I have a good HMO from a Blue Cross company, costs about $200/month now, was about $140 6 years ago when I first got it. This is through a group policy I have for myself and my employees.

IMO dental insurance is a waste unless you need to get serious work done. In my area the only dentists on the insurance networks are gum bleeding hacks. My old dental insurance would only reimburse ~30% of the bill for the dentist that I use. So after paying ~$30/month premium you go for two check-ups that cost about $180ea, get reimbursed all of $60 for each visit. Just doesn't add up.

IF detailers had a proper community group, there is chance we could apply for discounted rates if we all shopped together. Alas, most of us can argue over what shampoo or wash media to use to no end, how could we decide on insurance...

You can get a group policy on your own through a broker. Has to be at least two people. Your rates won't go much lower then that unless you have a large group.

I know it isn't cheap, when I was laid off from my job, they wanted $1,200 /month for health coverage for me and my family. I signed the kids up for CHIP, my wife got it where she works, and it was $500 for just me.

hahahahahahahahahahahhaha!

I had to create a business/llc just to get health care coverage because I'm a kidney transplant patient etc and can't get individual health care. So basically as long as you have an LLC and some other business type things and more than one person to add..may have to add wife as employee..then you should be good to go. It's a sad pain in the *** but people like myself, must have it!

It's very unfortunate that people in your situation have such a tough time getting health insurance. With the health care reforms that are happening, I hope that one day you will be able to enjoy your country's excellent health care system without worrying about how much you're going to have to pay.
