Securing Equipment in Cargo Van

AMDin93103

I like cheese.
I just picked up my cargo van last weekend and am confused on how to secure the equipment I have and will be getting. I know asking this makes me sound a little naive but :dunno The rear of the van has a grooved floor with a pvc/foam-backed lining covering the entire length.

I will need to secure a PW, generator, and a 90 & 45 gallon tank. Do I lay 1" plywood form fitted to the floor or what? I am trying to prevent shifting as well as theft. TIA.

That's a decent idea. Have a plywood form made in the shape of your van floor. Then layout your stuff on the form (outside on the ground) and mark where you need to drill for bolts.

I personally would use carriage bolts and if you really want to lock it in, have a 1/4" thick piece of sheet metal made with drill holes that match the plywood, weld the heads of the carriage bolts to the steel plate (to make a threaded stud plate) then slip the threaded ends of the bolts through the holes in the plywood.

Once you have everything set up, place the plywood with its threaded stud plates in place in the van and bolt down your equipment. I suggest the threaded stud plates so that the carriage bolts won't strip the plywood if you need to unbolt & remove one of the peices of equipment (and it will distribute the load so they won't pull out of the wood and go flying in case of an accident).

That sounds like a straight-forward, simple enough design. I do have welder friend to help me out. Unless someone can give me a better idea then I am going to get started on that this weekend. Thanks for your help Don :headbang

Don's idea is a good one . If welding is to much trouble , you could do you plywood floor and frame out on top of the plywood spots for your equipment with 2x4's layed flat . You screw the 2x4's down with drywall screws and then use eye bolts into the 2x4's to secure your equipment down . I would paint the plywood to seal it .

Or your buddy could lay you down a diamond plate aluminum floor and weld you up hold downs for the equipment . This floor would be water proof and easy to clean up spills , not to mention look awesome. :bigups

or you go back to the plywood floor and mount E tracking into the floor . With the E tracking you could secure anything in any place and move stuff around if you weren't happy with the setup or got some new equipment that was bigger or smaller . The E track would give you more freedom when it comes to securing things.
