Sealant before NXT?

I really love the way NXT looks, and certainly plan on using it on my red car, as it is so easy to use and I can add more as I please, so durability isn't too much of a concern. I am a little unsure if there is a place or need for a sealant in my current regime with regards to using the NXT.

I currently polish with PBW SSR polishes as needed, then apply Klasse AIO as needed, with NXT directly over, about two layers, and maintain either with the spray wax, or just applying a fresh coat every once in a while, since NXT can't seem to be layered. Sometimes I will top with a carnauba. This keeps the car looking good enough to suit me, but I am wondering if I will get any added depth/clarity with a pure sealant beneath the NXT... something like a Wolfgang or 4* UPP or Klasse SG or ??????

It seems to me that the NXT would slightly diminish the effects of a sealant with its (very) mild cleaning agents working at the sealant with each application, but I'm not sure, so that's why I'm posting this :xyxthumbs

Well, this is an issue that has been debated here in the past. Some posters feel that NXT is going to significantly diminish an underlying sealant. Other posters feel that NXT is too mild to have much of an impact. I think that I am in the former camp.

Personally, I don't think SG or UPP is going to add much if you cover it with NXT. I actually think you'd be better off adding putting something like #16 on top of NXT.

I have observed the cleaning power of NXT. Its not extreme like AIO, but it is there. The fine abrasives in NXT would at least remove some of whatever is underneath it. It is my feeling that NXT is either a 'just use this and don't worry about anything else' kind of a product, or one where you just worry about topping it with a carnauba or something. I really don't see it as being a product you want to layer with other things. Its something for the masses to enjoy, but it really doesn't compare to the finer sealants like Klasse or Zaino or others.

I have AIO and 5 coats of SG on my car. I have used NXT paste wax (not the liquid) on top. NXT definitely dulls a Klasse finish. I still think that NXT wax is an excellent wax on its own, surprisingly easy to use and gives good results. Not very nice looking immediately after application, need to use a QD (I used EO) to improve the looks. Surprisingly, it looks much better the next day. Just not in the same league as Klasse or Souveran, echoing Jngrbrdman's opinion..

Interesting...but kind of the answer I was expecting to get. I would like to use both the Klasse twins AND nxt, but it seems to be one or the other. Decisions, decisions :sosad

I just tried UPP on a light colored car. I like it alot more than NXT. It is possible that NXT looks better on something like black or red, but im not sure, UPP is outstanding.

Jngrbrdman- I agree NXT is a stand alone product for Joe Average and not meant to be 'layered' or used with other products. Go to store pick up NXT, come home , wash car, apply NXT-done

It's also a product for some Autopians who like the look and think it's one of the best out there. They like to apply wax as a hobby. Wash, clay, prep apply NXT. Then wash and apply NXT or Spray Wax weekly. Repeat clay & prep twice per year. Don't top with anything NXT looks great by itself. ;)

Based on my experiences with NXT, I believe itâ€â„¢s more of a light cleaner wax than LSP. After corrective polishing, apply a nice coat of NXT and then top with a quality carnauba or sealant (one which bonds to NXT). Iâ€â„¢ve found that topping a sealant (HGSG, GW, or EX-P) with NXT will significantly diminish the longevity and brilliance of the surface.

What is a sealant that would bond with NXT?

After reading the replies in this thread, I think its pretty interesting how NXT has gone from being Autopias most talked about and revolutionary "LSP", designed to bring your finish to its MAXIMUM POTENTIAL, to become just a decent OTC cleaner wax. All in less than 6 months. Maybe we just need another NXT pep rally.

We were told that this was the best "LSP" Megs had to offer.

Amazing.....

I personally love using the NXT. I know it has its downfalls, but the ease of use and availability make it a pleasure for me to use, plus it is VERY forgiving, and easy to maintain with the spray wax and now the NXT Speed Detailer. That's why I'm so set on leaving it in my regime. Plus, it looks friggin' awesome on red. :xyxthumbs

Does NXT have cleaners?

:nixweiss: It looks like we have come full circle. There were poeple who said NXT had cleaners in it and were blasted for stating that. They had to be dead wrong. Then from Meguiars themself comes the admission that it does have cleaners. But only sleight cleaners. Ok? Is it clear now? Some people say it still don't have cleaners even though Meguiars said it does. If it looks good on red, keep using it. But alot of stuff looks good on red: ATF, NanoWax, EX, Souveran, S100, Nufinish, kiwi shoe polish, NXT. Sounds like you want NXT cleaning abilitys. Why not use a real cleaner like 3M Swirl Mark Remover? Then put on your Klasse? Why use NXT as a cleaner when it might not have cleaners or it might so who knows.

I do use "real" cleaners. I use PBW SSR line and Klasse AIO. I'm not trying to start a "does NXT have cleaners or not" war. I think most of us now know it has very mild cleaning agents in it. I simply like working with NXT, and am not looking for a replacement. I was just asking like-minded individuals their opinion on applying NXT over a pure sealant. That's all. :xyxthumbs

For what it's worth I used some AIO and then topped off with one coat of NXT. I'll probably apply a second coat to see if it makes any difference.

Wow, the upper portion of that hood looks like a mirror. Great job on that Porsche :xyxthumbs I love the AIO/NXT combo as well.

I agree; I was disappointed at first, but after better prep (ColorX or AIO), NXT has become my favorite for Reds, blacks and whites. Metallics seem to look better with VM and DC3.....

For anyone interested about layering NXT.... I just received this reply from Meguiars:

"Thank you for your interest in Meguiar's products.

The NXT Tech Wax can be layered. It is recommended that you wait 24 hours between waxings in order for the polymers in the Tech Wax to completely adhere to the paint. After 2-3 applications, there is no added benefit to layering the wax."

DavidB mentioned that the protection associated with AIO is minimized by the WOWO procedure that most detailers use. So, even if NXT did degrade the underlying coat of AIO, you probably woudn't be loosing much. In the meantime, AIO probably gets your car nice and clean so that NXT can bond.
