Scratches on hood question.

I friend at work has a dark blue 2010 Hyundai Elantra.

His young daughter and a friend happened to do some damage to the hood.

I took a quick look and you can see several scratches went thru to the primer, however they are really thin.

I'd like to help him out if I could, and I know a repaint would probably be the way to go, but money is an issue.

My question is would it be better to polish out what I could and go behind with a

repair kit such as Dr. Colorchip or something, or would it be better to try the repair first and polish out later.

Would the repair have a better chance of working without the rounded edges?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have much experience with touch-ups, but since I am the first to respond...

Touch-up paint will have a better chance of bonding if you do so before polishing for the same reason a little sanding should be done before adding a coat of clear on a panel. It needs something to bite to. Plus, rounding the edges will effectively widen the gap at the surface level making the repair more noticeable. If the scratches are all the way through the paint, there is little that polishing is going to do to help it except reduce the sharp edges and maybe fill a little. (Another reason not to polish before repairing.)

Nth degree pretty much covered it. on darker colors I have had decent repairs with touch up paint and stripping tape. I use 3m stripping tape and try to outline the scratch on both sides. Once you have done this then fill in the scratch with the touch up paint. I use the tape to keep the paint only in the scratch. Also the tape is so thin and made to do graphics so you can bend and follow the contours of the scratch since most scratches are perfectly straight. Remove the tape and sand flat with 2000 grit sand paper. Then polish the area. Another reason to polish last would be so you have as much clear coat to work with when sanding.

Obviously something like this should be repainted. But customers that don't want to spend the money on a repaint have been very happy with the results. I just make sure they know that nothing short of repainting will be perfect.

Thanks, pretty much what I was thinking.

There's no magic going to happen here, he's just hoping to tone it down and keep it from rusting.

I got lucky on a SUV that was keyed but they must have used the non cut side and I got good correction.

As well as removing some swirls....

on darker emblem I screw had decorous repairs with touching up makeup and uncovering video. I use 3m uncovering tapeline and try to precis the scratch on both sides. Erstwhile you get finished this then stuff in the ***** with the affect up coating. I use the taping to protect the makeup only in the incise. Also the tapeline is so lanky and made to do graphics so you can flex and result the contours of the itch with 2000 grit sand publisher.
