Scratches not 100% Removed. Advise?

I spent last night working on the trunk of my wife's new Acura. It has some nice dealer installed scratches where it appears that they wiped the trunk down while it was a bit too dirty. The scratches are very light and look to be about the depth of standard spider webbing scratches. More than anything, it annoys me knowing they are there. I know, I need help.



Here is what I have tried...

I QD'd the area to remove any dust and such. I used my DP Mild Swirl remover on a Wolfgang orange pad at 3 on the PC. That did not seem to do much so I went over it again with the same setup. That was better but not great so I put the PC up to 4 and that helped even more. I then swapped to some PB Pro Polish on a Wolfgang orange pad. That brought some shine back. I topped it with PB Ex w/ Carnuba. In the right light, I can still see the scratches. They are definitely better than before, but still there.



I am guessing that the Mild Swirl Remover may not have been the best for this job. I was contemplating order the PB SSR series. Any other suggestions? I was not assuming that it would take more than 3 seperate passes to remove these. I think I just might not have the right product for the job.

Never used the DP Mild Swirl remover but I have never had any joy on defects without stepping up to 5 or 6 on the PC.



If this isnt working then I guess you would need to step up to the DP Super Swirl remover, SSR 2.5 etc.
 
i would crank up the speed a little bit to at least 4.5 and go up until they are removed, go to 6 if you have to
 
So the speed may be the issue? That is a thought! I will go back and try it again at a higher speed. Is it typical to require 3+ passes to get these things out or is that a sign of maybe not using the right product?

It may also have to do w/ the amount of pressure your putting on the pc. I've found that it is perfectly OK to put some pressure down. If more pressure (within reason) doesn't help, I second moving up to a more aggressive polish.
 
The DP MSR is a very workable polish, try it on 6, and i wouldnt use the super swirl remover for this. It is pretty aggressive, and will need the mild one maybe x2 to bring it back up, depending on the cars color.
 
And depending on the marring and your pad/product combo, yeah, it can take a *lot* more than three passes. You can literally spend a hour on one panel and some people have spent longer. The PC is a very mild tool when used for marring removal.
 
I truly don't think that on a new car, that you have to worry about the amount of paint left, especially after using a mild polish when you tried to remove the swirls. Keeping in mind that you said that the scratches look much like spiderwebbing, I think they probably will come out . I wouldn't take a heavy cut to the paint, but if the marks are bothering you, and the car is new, I don't see any harm in trying again.

Yeah, especially with the PC. My previous "say good enough" post was more a general observation, not really aimed at GTScott. If he can avoid remarring the finish, I'd do what's necessary to fix it. When my '01 S8 got marred I took the rotary to it quite aggressively, but that's only the second time it's been polished since new (and it hasn't needed polishing since).
