Scratched glass

Just curious if there are any good, safe products out there to remove scratches from glass. My rear driver's side window is getting scratched up from me always putting the window up and down.

Which leads me to my second question: how do you think the glass is getting scratched? It has been getting lightly scratched for a few years (6 year old car). The only thing that touches it is the outside weatherstripping. How can you clean that, especially since my rear window does not go all the way down?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,
Neil

There are no effective glass polishes that will remove scratches, there is something inside the door that is rubbing up on the window take the inside panel off and have a look

Sometimes this is caused by dirt under the weatherstrip.

Use something thin and pry the rubber out away from the glass and use compressed air to blow it out.

Stuff like this will polish glass, but it's not easy to use. There are other cerium oxide glass cleaning polishes/kits available, this was just the first one I clicked on after a quick search.

Glass gets EXTREMELY hot when you polish it with the pressure required to effectively abrade it. I'm talking REALLY hot. You gotta be careful... too much heat and/or uneven polishing and you'll distort the optical properties of the glass.

There's a few places around the internet that explain glass polishing. Todd (a source of great information on car detailing, and he's (in)famous on a few different detailing boards) had a great tutorial at one time, but it seems to have been removed from "that other forum".

Glass polishing isn't particularly easy, and requires special polishes that have really hard abrasives (cerium oxide) in them. These abrasives are much harder than the ones used in car polishes.

You'll also need special pads and drill/polisher attachments.

Deep scratches are just about impossible to get out, but light stuff can be gotten with the right stuff... and a lot of courage. :)

SuperBee hit the nail on the head. It's very difficult to polish glass and the end result will likely not be as optically clear as the original piece.

If you don't want to attempt this you can find glass shops that will polish it for you.

If the scratches are deep you need to replace the glass but before you do that make sure you find out what did the damage.

thanks for the replies guys. I do need to figure out why it is getting scratched. Guess it is time to open up the door panel and get the air compressor out! Most of the scratches are really light, but noticeable. First I'll find and fix the cause, then look to fix the scratches.
