Scotchbrite + Dad + glass Ugggh!

Those helpful Dads........

I went to visit my Dad the other day. He usually leaves the keys so I can move his car out of the garage so I can put mine there.....(for this he gets a total detail).

But this time....no keys. So I park my car behind his and go off for the day.

I return and get into the car and notice some crazy scatches all over the glass of the E420. You can really see them while using the wipers and while under streetlamps.

So I ask...."Hey, what happened to my windshield?"

Sheepishly my Dad answers. "I forgot to leave the keys and when got back from Tennis the birds crapped all over your windshield....but I wiped it off."

"With ....what????"

"A Scotchbrite pad....that's okay right?" He looked at me knowing it was already not "alright".

So what can I do short of replacing the windshield?

I have some fine white Pumice dust...but I am scared to get than anywhere near the car paint.

I also have a product called "No streek" glass polish.

What to do??

What to use??

I have Menzerna ip and fp as well as some mothers chrome polish. The pumice is FF grade.

Anyone with experience with the same problem?

I would go with some paint polish like Menzerna...Always use the least abrasive possible.

By hand, you will most likely have little luck, but if you have a PC, you have a better shot. Be careful though as glass is no easy thing to work with.

Not only is glass harder than paint, it's harder than the metal underneath paint. If the glass is truly scratched polishing it smooth again requires a seriously hard (but very fine grit) abrasive.

Glass polishing compounds are available but if you're not looking forward to the adventure of grinding on your windshield the service is available at a nominal cost. Try checking with local windshield glass places to see if they offer it.

In Massachusetts. glass is covered under the comprehensive part of your insurance with ZERO deductible. Meaning that when people have a chip or scratch in their glass.......they typically break it.

So there is little financial incentive for people to pay for glass polishing..... so I would have to do it myself- or get it done in another state. I called JN phillips auto glass and they said they did not do it.

Anyway- it's not my car with the glass damage and so I really couldn't break the glass. I just want to fix it. Has anyone had experience with this...what am I getting into????

have you tried a local detailing supply store for glass polishes? I bought a polish from a line called Detailer's Pride and it's awesome stuff. The windshield gets noisy with the wipers going and also looks scratched after a few weeks. So I polish it by hand with this stuff and it feels like I'm wiping it with mud, but when all done its as smooth as..... well- glass, new glass. I also used Zaino glass polish and it didn't remove any of the water spots that it's advertised to remove, and didn't make the glass nearly as smooth. Your probably safe trying any car polishes, if it wont hurt the paint it wont hurt the glass.

If the scratches are in the glass itself I wouldnâ€â„¢t get my hopes up on polishes from detailing suppliers. Theyâ€â„¢re made to polish off stuff that is stuck to the glass. Grinding the glass itself it an entirely different matter.

They canâ€â„¢t hurt though and it wonâ€â„¢t cost much to try.

If there is anybody near you involved with classic cars and restorations (who definitely wonâ€â„¢t be breaking a windshield on purpose) they might be able to point to somebody that does glass polishing.

Have you thought about a punch and a hammer? ;)
