sandmarks on windshield

My boss asked me how to take out the sandmarks out of the windshield, and too be honest I have never really thought about this until he asked and I notice them on my car too. I am taking about the pit marks you see when the sun hits the windshield, almost looks like sand blasting... Hope you know what I am talking about, sorry I cant explain this any better.

Is there something to fill this in or minimize the sand mark specks??
 
I done a lot of research of this subject a while back and didn't come up with a whole lot of definitive proof its possible. I almost got the Diamondite glass polishes and Lake Country glass cutting pads, but sprung for stuff I needed at the time instead. I would like to see a good write up on the subject before I spent the money, much less tell someone that's the way to go.
 
I'm not saying that you shouldn't polish glass at all. Most glass will come out looking much, much better. However, I've polished severely pitted front windshields in the past and found that it actually makes the pits stand out even more once the windshield is polished out.


It's sorta like paint correction...you can polish damaged paint to a perfect or near-perfect shine but (barring touch up paint or a re-spray) you can't put paint where there wasn't any to begin with.

While you can polish EXTREMELY light pitting out of a windshield, in most cases it is too deep to successfully polish out. Even extremely light scratching, such as wiper track marks, are difficult to remove. Glass is extremely hard (compared to automotive paint) and most visible pitting is deep enough that (even if you could) remove it, you would risk distorting the glass. This can great a lens effect, similar to looking through a fish bowl or a pair of eye glasses.
