Same old, same old... Why do we do it?

My car runs better when it's clean. And it's always nice to hear "is it new?" I go no, it's 4 yo and has over 50k miles.

I like people to know that even though I drive an econo-box (modified for auto-x, anyway) I like to take the best care of it that I can.

If it's something you care about it and it shows, I beleive that shows something about your character.

I do it because of all the reasons on this board. Man has to have a feeling of acomplishment. To some men it is putting a new deck on there house and spending days to do it. To me and I guess everybody on this board the feeling of acomplishment comes from spending a few hours detailing there cars. I really love to do it.

I started this compulsion, because I finally had a nice car and wanted to keep it that way. I had no idea that I would find Autopia and get sucked in to this as a hobby. My car is glad that I did and I appreciate having a shiny car.

I stumbled on to this site and I didn't really realize what it took make a car "look clean". I've learn so much and have spent more money in the last month on products (GEPC, waxes, wheel cleaner, micro fiber towels, etc.) than beer. Damn......thanks for getting my priorities straight.

For me:

1. After years of hard work and saving I finally have the car I have always wanted, a black 2 door BMW speedster! and I will do ANYTHING to spend more time with it. I love to look at it, touch it, show it off, you name it!

Detailing it is just one of the ways that I can enjoy one small dream come true.

2. It truly is relaxing.

3. It's a way to spend a few hours NOT thinking about work stresses, relationship stresses, etc.

4. In many parts of life (work, relationships, kids) it is hard to see immediate results. With detailing, I can. And it rejeuvinates my spirit and faith in myself, that I CAN effect change.

TOO ZEN?

I'm not sure why i started doing it. It just sort of caught on. I do it now because it's just grown on me. I notice when a black car is filled with swirls. I do other people's cars a little for the money (poor college student getting poorer by the hour), but not so much since i don't really set prices. Just have people pay me based on how happy they are. I think it's kind of fun taking something that most people woudl give up on, and turn it into something that looks better than brand new.

Every time i do a car 1/2 way through i'm thinking to myself that this one is the one that just isn't going to look great like the others. It's the one that won't have the same effect. Then magically i wipe of that last bit of whatever, and it's like a miracle happened. Everytime without failure it is a huge improvment. The owners are always more than satisfied. No matter how many times i do it i'm still shocked at the results.

I guess it's kind of like me and computers. Same reason people play football or like to act in plays or write poetry. I do it just because it's what i do.
