It's crazy how service varies from area to area, around here it isn't that great...but Nextel isn't either and I know they have good service in other areas. Trust me you are not alone on not buying a phone for $500 it is kinda ridiculous if you think about it. I think it's geared towards us geeky teenagers who want the latest and greatest, until the next coolest thing comes out next week 
It will be interesting to see though how people like them and if they are really...functional. While thinking about it, just think of the battery power that thing is going to have to have to run stuff like that, bluetooth, wi-fi, phone, playing mp3's More than likely it won't have sufficient battery power and people will hate the thing

This thing looks veeery cool, and honestly I don't think $500 is such a bad starting price for such a multi-faceted contraption. I definitely want to see some reviews. But as everyone has said....ONLY CINGULAR??? Here on Lawnguyland Verizon is the only service that gets any reception...so this thing is already out of the question.

I suppose I'm in the minority but all this old dawg wants is a phone that works wherever I am. No camera, no internet, just a small portable reliable phone. I've been with Verizon about six years and have no complaints with them.

Turns out it wouldn't play dual layer dvds when they came out even though they were a part of the original spec for DVD. After dozens of phone calls to Samsung, I was told that they didn't think anyone would actually use dual layer so they didn't account for it. Said sorry and no offer to do anything.

I have a LG8300 (VCast) through Verizon and was pretty pissed to learn that I could not transfer my MP3s from my MAC to my phone. They said I had to use WMA files...screw that.
My goal has always been to consolidate devices. I currenlty have a phone, ipod, GPS, camera and a radar detector. I would love to have the perfect device (i.e. a phone with ipod that has a great camera and GPS that actually shows you where the police are sitting... now that would be a great device IMHO).
I'm sure in the near future we will have a device with the above capabilities. I simply wish they would hurry it up.

I'm with you JJ - - I have an XM Radio, had an iPod Video and then my cell phone which basically looks like a mini computer according to my brother haha and in my car it just seemed like I had all these gadgets laying around.
My perfect device would be everything my phone has now but add in the capability of carrying your XM subcription with you on the device...then I would have no need for an iPod. Kinda like a portable XM radio rather than just the portability I have of putting it in a boom box. I know this is already possible by using SD cards which my phone already has...but I wish there was a way I could automatically (wirelessly) through bluetooth just sync with any computer to transfer/share files and carry them with me.

I had a Handspring Visor Deluxe with add on GSM card. Other than the 4 quick buttons on the palm, everything was screen/touch based, this was circa 1999. My point it there is nothing new on this phone other than good packaging. Also the iPhone does not run true OSX. Its like saying a Windows phone runs Windows XP.

This probably isn't likely, but maybe go to apple.com and take a look at Jobs' keynote where he shows the features of the phone (only because this is the only place to see it in operation). If there's already a single device that can do all of the things described, then I stand corrected. The "multi-touch" technology alone is vastly different than previous touchscreens, not to mention the fact that it has the first fully usable HTML browser for a phone (using Safari). And just fundamentally speaking, an iPod and cell phone in one device is new technology.
Naturally, there is carryover from existing technology (that's true of nearly anything), but to say there is nothing new here I think is a misstatement. There wouldn't have been over 200 patents issued in the development process if that were the case.
