Rotary/PFW Help

I need some help here pretty bad. Im working on a 2001 black chevy impala. Im using Optimum Compound with PFW at around 1500-1700 and I cant seem to get much of the defects out. Do I bump up to hypercompound or increase my pressure and speed? Also when the areas that do clean up and I use Optimum Polish I seem to be putting in holograms. How do I go about removing those. To be honest ive never done black before and this is really discouraging. When im using OP, I think I was working it in around 1400?

Also when Im doing my passes. should I do side to side and up and down? how many times. Ive never used PFW before either and its making my head hurt. Im just going to give up for today because I dont feel like making a mistake.

Please help!

What pad are you using OP with? I'd suggest following OC/PFW up with a foam polishing pad and OP. If OC/PFW isn't cutting it to begin with, start with OHC/PFW.

Optimum polishes have a fairly decent working time and don't dust much IIRC. I would try a 18x18" area or so and make 3-4 passes and see how it finishes. Yes, side to side, then up and down. I wouldn't exceed 1400RPM if you are new to the rotary, especially on foam.

Im using a LC white pad with OP. I guess im not sure what rpms to run it at to get rid of the holograms.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with OP but I would try making the last couple passes close to 1000rpm with very little pressure. Also make sure you pad is centered on the backing plate. Using a softer black or blue pad may be worth a try as well.

Finishing out 100% hologram-free via rotary isn't easy. I'd just go over it with a PC/etc. and remove 'em that way. I'm not a huge fan of OP either, but others seem to do OK with it.

Ya I cant finish down 100% thats for sure. If OHC doesnt cut it with the PFW, then what would you guys reccomend I do? I have a automotive paint store in town. Meguiars 95? Every GM car ive touched seems hard as nails.

Ern- Sorry, never tried the M95 or M105 :nixweiss

GM clear corrects OK with the PC/3.5" PFW/1Z Pasta Intensiv, so you should be able to find some Meg's/etc. product that'll work too. Though that 1Z stuff *is* kinda unique with it's easy-fracture abrasives....

So are you saying I should use my PC and 3.5 pfw instead of my rotary and 6.5 pfw ?

No, sorry, didn't mean to get off on the wrong track...

The original problem was holograms, and I'd just use the PC to get rid of those. When you mentioned the hard clear and M95 I got sidetracked :o

For serious initial correction you should do OK with either the M105 or the M95 with the PFW...if I can do it by PC you can do it by rotary. But anything that aggressive is gonna leave holograms/etc. and I can never get those sorted out with OP/rotary (but hey, that's just me).
