Rotary Pads

Hey everyone,

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I searched with no luck. Maybe someone can link me if necessary.

Anyway, I tried the UDM on a 10 year old car today that was in bad shape - lots of deep clearcoat scratches. The clearcoat was really hard too.. and I barely made a dent, even with SFX 1 and the orange cutting pad.

So, I'm about to order a Makita 9227 to use when heavy cutting is needed, but I'm unsure on the pads. I was checking out autogeek's pads:

Foam / Wool Pads & Accessories for Rotary/Circular Polishers

I'm assuming foam pads are recommended for beginners vs wool? Any real difference in the 6 or 8 inch pads in terms of effectiveness? and lastly, any recommendations? edge, ccs or the wave pads(whats so special about these)?

thanks!

Foamed wool pads are highly recommended. Soft foam pads work best with the rotary. The Megs yellow is a nice average polishing pad. The black LC pad is nice for final finishing.

Rotary pads... I use Meguiars pads pretty much exclusively on the rotary these days as I find they suit the work I'm doing very well indeed and are very comfortable to use and easy to control... Available in both 6" and 8" sizes, I'd start off with the former until you get used to the tool and then move up to the larger pads for larger panels such as bonnets and roofs.

I love the foamed wool pad from LC. The orange is also very good.

Meguiars yellow is a good allround pad as well.

Dave KG: The Meg´s are not 6", they are 6,5" ;) and btw, what do you think about the C1 sealant?

They make 6" pads, at least they did.

Just a slight hijack

Do these work well on a UDM?

Also Optimum is recomended for beginners from what I've read

I use a PC DAbut the pads will work just the same, for the rotary question for almost any job requiring med-hvy scratch removal or oxi removal, I start with 1200 grit polish and the red meg pad, according to the result i either switch to a wool pad with the 1200 or just keep the meg pad and go with 800
