Rotary Pad Types

My Makita 9227 doesn't have a little "nub" with which to line up pads. Instead, it has a removable cylinder. All I have right now are LC flat pads and Meg's pads. Both have holes in the velcro where you should line up the pad (here is where the "nub" would come in handy--just taco the pad, line up, and go) but the pads are solid. Pad placement is a tedious task for me right now.

---Thus--

Should I attempt to undergo surgery on the pads I have, turning my pads into doughnuts? If not, which pads and backing plates are the winners for diehard rotary users. There have been suggestions for the contoured LC pads from Detailers Paradise. Is this :up across the board? I have to say right off, I'm not a big fan of the wool pad, so any and all foam suggestions will be appreciated!

Thanks.

I recently switched to Meguiar's 5.5" backing plate, with 6.5" foam pads. This after watching Mike Phillips do some pretty impressive work

I still use the bigger pads (on my backup rotary).

The pad and plate on my Fein weigh the same as my PC! Very easy to use.

How do you line up those Meg's pads, though? I was under the impression that even a slight "wobble" in the rotary's motion was enough to leave holograms.

Pictures are worth a thousand words...

The pad on the left is Meg's 6.5" - note the hole in the pad, and the center protusion on the backing plate...

The pad on the right is the orange 'power pad' from cma.

I'm not sure about a (slightly) offcenter pad causing holographic swirls...

That's usually caused by excessive speed, heat, and/or lack of product, in my experience.
