Rotary Pad questions

Edge2000 Flat pads? What size, 6.5"? How does the yellow edge compare to yellow LC 6.5" as I don't have any edge stuff.

Okay. I'll give you my three most common combos (though I have about 30 different pad styles and even more polishes and compounds, so I use an infinite number of combos)



I prefer the 7" lambwool pads for most heavy cutting...and I now prefer to use HTEC with it. Be careful, because some of the lambwool pads approach 8", which is too much overhang for a 6" backing plate.



For med/heavy cutting, I like HTEC mixed with OP with the white LCVC pads.



For final finishing the green p2 with 106ff is unbeatable if BOTH cut and final finish...it really is amazing and how much cut this stuff provides, and yet finishes down perfectly, even on pure black.

I generate a lot of heat with my 6 to 8 inch cutting pads. Usually I have the speed up to about 1800 RPM.



A larger pad will probably generate more heat due to the higher speed at the edge as mentioned. It might seem intuitive to think that the pad will create a specific amount of heat no matter the size, and thus would be distributed more evenly. But rotary polishers are not like PCs, they do not bog down. They will maintain their speed even with a greater load, and because of this are doing more work on the paint, resulting in more heating overall. In fact, with a larger pad in the sun, I've had to worry about my polisher overheating more than the paint. I had my Metabo stop working until I let it cool down twice!
 
i use either the LC 7.5" or 6.5" pads... i use the bigger ones for flatter surfaces and away from corners... i hate the bigger pads because i can't go to the edge of some panels, such as rear quarter panel, or i will burn the bumper underneath... keep in mind though, whatever you guys' solution is as to which heat up more/faster... if yo go with the pads i'm using, the 6.5" ones are bigger, because the 7.5" ones have the chamfer at the edges and less surface area when working flat

I've got the Edge pads with the beveled edges-they have a very slight concave nature that reduces splatter.
