Rotary BP's

Hello all, I am going to purchase a makita here soon and was wondering about the BP's. I looked on AG and they have the flexible ones. Are those what people are using? Plus how much hang should I have, 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, more? Thanks

I just bought my Makita last night off Amazon :)

I'm probably going to order the 3M backing plate off Phil or something. As well as the 4 inch one ;)

Remember when selecting a backing plate, you want the plate to extend as far to the edge of the pad as possible, to provide even pressure. Obviousy you want some safe guard (you do not want the backing plate extending all the way to the edge) but you don't want to small of a backing plate (which only focuses the pressure over a smaller diameter).

I have a couple of the 3M backing plates and I think they are a lot of hype. The diameter is too small, meaning it is hard to get up to the edges of the paint and provide enough pressure to remove paint.

For a rotary I perfer the Meguiars W66 backing plate (5 3/4 inch diameter works great with both flat 6.5 inch and curved 7.5 Lake Country pads.

Ive have the W66 and 3M backing plates, as well as some smaller ones. I prefer 5.5" pads and the 3M BP works great for that size. Anything larger and the W66 backing plate is great too.

Thanks guys.

Josh, I was trying to remember the one you had but couldn't. Anyway, hopefully I'll pull the trigger tomorrow of Monday.

Cool, the one I have on the PC is old and shot, the one I have on the rotary is still working like a champ.
