Rotary backing plate question

I just got the Chicago Electric rotary from Harbor freight, and it comes with a 7" backing plate.
Has anyone used it, it seems that I would have to get 8 1/2" pads to use with it.
Due to the fact that I am a complete novice rotary user, is the 8 1/2" to much for me.

All thoughts and opions are appreciated

Hi jay. If it is a variable speed rotary then it is fine for home use.You want to get 6" velcro backing plate or even 5" velcro backing plate depending on your pad choice and flexible is my choice for backing plates and remember 5/8-#11 is thread size you need.If you have never used this and i assume that is correct, you should try and practice on junk panel first, if not start at slower speeds 3 to 31/2 and use least aggressive product and pads first and keep moving never stop.Read alot first before trying and take your time.
 
Actually the Chicago Electric Rotary I have has 6 speed settings. They are the following:
1 1000 rpm
2 1400
3 1800
4 2200
5 2600
6 3000
So even set on 3 you are cranking it out pretty good for starters. 2 generally works best for me, being a complete newbie to the rotary. A 5" backing plate works best for me because the larger pads are just too hard to handle.

It died on me last year and I unsure wheter to make the repair on it or junk it. So instead I will practice on it ;)

That's the one I have, I was reading through the entire manual and couldn't find anything concerning the speed to the #'s on the dial.
Does yours take a second or so to get up to full speed?
