Rock chip...with rust

Ordering paint - should I go with paintscratch.com?

There, or Automotive Touchup dot com (something like that anyhow..). Unless you do decide to do the Rust Encapsulator, in which case I'd look for something enamel-based (search on "herrington").

No matter who you go with, it's always hit-or-miss IME regarding how well it'll match; sometimes it's great, sometimes it's awful, and now and then it's in-between...purely a crap-shoot.

OK, I finally got around to ordering my touch-up paint, and I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get the pen from MicroMark and do it right.

There is one thing that I'm still concerned with - the rust encapsulator. I looked on Eastwood's site, and AFAICT, they only sell it in an aerosol. I don't think I'm good enough to use a spray without it going everywhere. And I don't need a quart, probably only an ounce or so. I was going to use the toothpick method in all phases. The only thing I've found so far is Plasti-kote Rust Not converter. Mar-Hyde looks like it's available by the pint, too, as are several others that I've not heard of before on Amazon. I'm not opposed to using the Eastwood product, but buying a quart seems like huge overkill. I've no plans to treat any frames.

I ordered the primer with my paint, so no worries there. The other question I have is if I remove the rust with the pen, is the converter needed for any rust I can't see, or those microscopic specks of rust 'dust' that I might leave behind?

I hope it doesn't disappoint you...while I'm standing by my recommendation it's not the micacle worker that some might expect  The filaments sure do wear out quickly and, well...I wish you were closer so you could just try mine first. Heh heh, you could just use some of my Rust Encapsulator too :D

While it's easy for me to spend your money ;) I'd buy the quart. I know that *I* keep finding uses for it.

Or, you could get the aerosol and spray it into a container (away from the car in case of drift/overspray!) and apply from that.

Seriously, I'm *that* sold on the Rust Encapsulator!

Those might be fine, just never know until you try 'em. But note that the converter doesn't really replace the Rust Encapsulator IMO, I use them both, converter first, then R E.

Anything anywhere that's rusty would look a lot better with that stuff on it ;)

Yes, still necessary. Ditto for the R E too IMO.

But for the umpteenth time, R E doesn't play nice with many touchup paints. Heh heh, I get the feeling you won't be buying R E, so try to be very diligent with the converter and when using the pen.

Buy refills for the pen while you're already getting nailed for the shipping.

Sigh. It's almost more trouble than it's worth.

You're right, I probably won't buy the encapsulator because of the possible issue with the paint. I think I'll just go with the converter and try my luck.

I ordered the ultra pen and refills, so hopefully that will be enough. Unfortunately, it's going to be next weekend before they are here. Another weekend wasted.

I sympathize. Heh heh, see why I seldom bother doing much about stonechips ;)

Hint: tape off the area around the chip so the pen's filaments don't mar the surrounding paint. And try to trim the filaments with a razor blade so the "pen's tip" is the right size/shape.

Hope you ordered refills, you won't believe how fast the filament can wear!

I did. I think it came with 12.

I really wouldn't bother with this, except for the rust. Still haven't decided on the rust converter/encapsulator yet, but the pen and paint should be here middle of next week.

CocheseUGA- OK, cool on the refills :xyxthumbs

I'd just see how things go. It's not like a) you won't effect some improvement to the situation no matter how things turn out, b) you have to fix things 100% right now, and/or c) you can't redo it come spring.

Oh, that "fall apart" comment reminds me...

The fiberglass that makes up the filaments can be a (literal) pain if it gets into your skin, and I sure wouldn't want to breath it in.

The pen arrived yesterday, much better shipping than I thought. I'm glad I bought the smaller one, it's still pretty big in comparison with the spot.

Hopefully I will be able to get this done on Saturday.

That's why you'll probably want to trip the tip of the filament with a razor blade (which is, BTW, easier said than done ;) ).

Good tip. :D

Paint came in yesterday, it's a pretty nice kit for the price.

1oz primer

1oz paint

2oz lacquer

1oz clearcoat

2.5oz liquid compound

tack rag

For about $27 shipped. I'll be picking up some orange 3M tape on Friday and will go to town on it Saturday in a garage. Then, hopefully before Christmas, I can try to even it out with the PC.

And where did you get the primer and paint and everything again? I have a dent in my quarter panel about 1 inch square that the paint has flaked away from and surface rust has moved in on (bought the car that way). I'm going to try this process myself in a couple weeks, but I was wondering where you found the paint, clearcoat and everything else listed above. I saw you bought lacquer as well; what are you using that for exactly?

I went with paintscratch.com and picked their 1oz kit. For something that big, I'd go with the 2oz kit.

I'll let you know how it goes on Monday.
