Detailing an old SL Mercedes from I think the 60's.

Lots of metal to polish which is why im excited.

But it is a weird colour. Like a deep pink but is tinted to looking like the colour of human organs......yuck.

It is metallic and well sprayed.

I will be using a random orbit polisher. And all the right gear.

I hate to be difficult, but could you guy make Meguiars reconmendations as my state rep is on leave dammit and you guys are more knowledgeable anyway.

Err... yeah. Yuck is right. :p

Please give more info. You haven't said what's wrong with it or what you're trying to accomplish.

The color should not impact the products you are using too much unless you are extremely picky....and prefer something on darks versus lights etc etc.....

We must see a pic of this color....:D

Well the car is not perfect. It just needs a good going over, no waxes on it, or hasnt been polished.

I want to get it to Autopia Standard. There are a few scratches i will finesse out.

- clay

- clean

- swirl remover

- showcar glaze

- polymer sealant

- wax

This is the general idea i had.

Well, if you're doing it by hand it might take quite a bit of work to get the paint in really good condition if it's all swirled up and neglected. You may want to have a stronger backup polish handy in case you can't do it with just a swirl remover - don't expect miracles from it with hand application. Something like DACP or a Fine Cut cleaner.

You can also try using the cleaner as a swirl remover too - it's suggested that (some) paint cleaners may be a bit more abrasive than Meguiar's #9.

If you want to use the polymer sealant, I'd skip the glaze for a couple reasons. The first is that it has some overlapping function with the swirl remover (which also does some filling). The second is that conventional wisdom says that sealants don't usually like to be applied over glazes. The light cleaners in the #20 may clean off the #7 anyway. Someone mentioned his use of a glaze under Zaino in another thread, but he is in the minority and it's too early to generally recommend this idea yet.

Alternatively, you can skip the polymer sealant and just do a conventional glaze/wax combination.

Might be the rarely seen Strawberry-Red Metallic. Picture of the color below:

Im using a random orbit polisher (hitachi) with a meguiars w8006 pad to polish the car.

I used to do stuff by hand but its too much like hard work.

What speed setting to you guys use, im afraid to go above 2?

And at what stage when applying the polish should i stop polishing?:nixweiss

so the process will now be

- clay bar

- cleaner

- swirl remover

- wax

Any glaze/wax combo's you reconmend.

I usually quik detail in between steps to get rid of oils and residue. is this a good idea.

I will get a pic of the car for you. Before and after.

Ok the colour is called "Rose Quartz"

Any help.

The car is being serviced right now, so i cant grab pics

:(

Well I'm not an expert on PC USE, but I believe most people comfortable with their PCs use speeds 4-6 (giving about 4000-6000 orbits, so translate that to your machine's settings).

With a lot of polishes (a lot of products actually...) a good place to stop polishing is when it's kinda turning dry and you're picking up/dusting away more product than you are spreading it around anymore. If you want to work it longer, squirt with QD.

Personally I wouldn't bother QDing in between steps unless it's just for spot/residue removal.

Don't sweat it too much about the colour or if the paint is clear/non-clear coated - products used and steps should be about the same.

I have used the meguiars polishing pad w8006 and it does not have much cut for a polishing pad. In other words you can safely use a stronger polish with that pad. I agree with 4DSC that DACP would be a good choice on a swirled neglected finish and the w8006 pad. Lets say you going to wash, clay,DACP,Now you have to decide if you want to use a glaze VS. polymer sealant. Look at the finish and ask yourself if that is the look/shine you want to lock in and if so use the polymer because they last longer. If you think the finish stills needs something extra like make up so to speak then consider a glaze. Now to lock the glaze shine in use a pure wax but not a cleaner wax.

Good Luck
