Review: Glanz Wax and Perls Gloss Shampoo

I consider myself an autopian in that I strive for the best finish possible on my vehicles. The time, effort and multi step processes that members put into their vehicles is amazing. However these multi-step process are not always practical for me. I work many hours at my job and the time that I am not working must divided among other household responsibilities, other hobbies/interest and spending time with my wife and friends. In light of these facts, my wife’s black BMW does not get the autopian treatment often. For one, it is the only automatic transmission car we own and my wife can not drive a manual. Add that to the fact she always has someplace to go and the result is I can never take the car out of commission for a full day to do any real detailing to it other than maybe 1-2 times a year. The result is I use Autopia and the knowledge here to best minimize my work and maximize my results. The purpose of this rambling prelude is set the stage and reasoning for this review and to warn those of you who clicked on this for an analysis of a product used on a finish that has under gone a very thorough preparation process...save your time and stop reading. However, for those of you who are interested in a review (by an enthusiast) of a product used in what I consider a real world application (at least my world) with minimal prep read on.

Goals: On my wife’s black car I strive to make it look as good as possible without utilizing huge blocks of time (see above for why). Durability, protection, ease of application and looks are all important. For my personal preference I like a glossy and very slick surface. I have experimented with many products in the past ranging from P21S, Blitz, NXT, Klasse and Zaino. Zaino has been the best compromise for me with very good durability and slickness. However, the finicky nature of the application process and its complete inability to hide minor swirling and to get marred easily is a turn off. I had been reading a lot about the Einszett products and have purchased many of them but have not really used them much.

Prep Work: Minimal. The car had been detarred (is that a word?) and clayed about 2 ½ months ago (had a nasty run in with some road construction). The car has some swirling, spider webbing and marring (could use a good polishing). The last polishing it received was well over a year ago and was not done aggressively. I last used NXT (when clayed) but have been very disappointed in its durability. I washed the car using the Z7 car wash and dried completely with a waffle weave MF.

Application of Glanz: Week day evening after washing the car and realizing that there was absolutely no water beading and/or sheeting going on. The surface felt “squeaky and void of any type of protection. I decided something need to be done but did not have the time for a full fledged detail so I decided to experiment with my Glanz Wax that has been sitting in my cabinet for about 3 months. I used a small foam applicator. The application was very easy and the Glanz dries to a haze almost instantly (solvent carriers evaporate very quickly). The Glanz was easily removed using a MF towel. I equate the process to being easier and quicker than using either P21S or NXT (which I consider both very easy to use). The Glanz is liquid (like water) and has what I consider a solvent smell (not unpleasant or obnoxious though). I used a small plastic applicator bottle supplied from Detailer’s Paradise for applying the product. I applied to the foam applicator first then to the finish. The removal was a breeze with no noticeable dusting (I was outside) and very little effort required to remove the product.

Look: When finished I was immediately struck with how slick, glossy and reflective the paint was. It was basically like Zaino after application of Z6 but with a softer “glow to it. Glanz also seems to have some filler/hiding capabilities as it greatly reduced the swirling and spider webbing on the car. I was extremely pleased. I am not saying to expect miracles as I could still notice some swirling but it was reduced significantly. For such a quick and easy application with no prep work I was very impressed.

Washing: Unfortunately, the weather has been horrible here with almost daily thunderstorms. The car is driven daily and sets outside at my wife’s school (high school teacher) during the day and is subjected to the extremes of heat, rain and lots of dirt and dust (school is expanding and lots of construction is going on) is garaged at night. After my application of Glanz the car went three weeks without anything being done to it and was driven on two out of town trips. This weekend I had the first break in the weather and the time to wash my wife’s car and get the grime off of it. The car was covered in road grime and looked horrible and I feared the Glanz had let me down much like NXT did under these less than idea conditions. However, during washing it immediately became clear that things underneath the grime were still in good shape. Even just spraying the car off with the hose revealed sections that would bead somewhat. After washing the beading was as good as I have ever experienced with any product. After washing, the car beads like crazy. Which lead me into my first discovery. The need for more waffle weave MF. I usually can do the car with 1 towel or at the very most use a dry towel to finish off things at the end. Not this time. The beading resulted in the first towel being saturated very quickly and required another towel just to get the car reasonably dried off. The hose drying method would be an good technique if you wanted to avoid the use additional towels.

Perls: The Perls shampoo is extremely slippery and has a great lubricant feel to it but it does not produce much suds and/or foaming. I have used the Perls shampoo a couple of times on the my other car (sans Glanz) and liked the product. I considered it a toss up between it and Z7 as my favorite shampoos. Z7 foams better and feels about the same lubricant wise compared to the Perls. However, the Perls does seem to leave some type of protection behind to cause some tight beading. However, when combined with the Glanz the beading was incredible. It will be interesting to see if the washing with Z7 on the Glanz results in the same type of beading.

After the Wash: I was amazed at the look. The finish was still very slick and glossy. Additionally, the swirl reduction I noticed after the first application was still in effect. For a quick and dirty “detail I thought the Glanz was exceptional. I can only imagine what it will look like after a full fledged polishing sessions to reduce the swirls and spider webbing.

Durability: No opinion. Still too early to determine the long term durability of the product. But it looks promising.

Conclusion: For my “real world application with minimal, to no prep, I have not used a better product. There really isn’t a draw back in its use in my opinion. It is both easy to apply and remove (assuming you don’t use the metal tin it comes in as it is difficult to use without spilling). The look was glossy and reflective with a slick surface. For my application it fit my needs perfectly.

Brian,

Great review. I also am in Indiana, I live around Fishers.

I have a black Audi A8 and a black Acura MDX. I use 1Z polishes as well as Glanz wax, and I can tell you, the whole product line works as well as the Glanz. You are right, using the no nozzle method when washing will leave your car nearly dry.

You should try the Glanz on your Porshe. I used it on a neighbors Lexus Coupe and it shine so bright it literally was hard to look at in the sun.

I can add very little to this. You pegged both products perfectly--they are both on the front of the shelf for me. David will be sending me two more bottles of Perls as of this AM:up (stupid special offer over email...:D )

Thanks for the helpful write-up! I've been considering the use of Glanz Wax on my fiancee's car. Her car is a daily driver and sits outside 24/7. As much as I would like to use a multi-step process on her car, we live in an apartment complex and are limited by both space and time. It sounds like Glanz is a good option for her car.

The Perls shampoo has quickly become one of my favorites. It cleans well, leaves some protection behind, and makes the car nice and glossy afterwards.

Thanks again!

Got to try it this past week and I too find it one of the better washes. True, not much on suds, but where it counts in lube amount and ease of lifting dirt off finish was one of the best I've used. It sure is close to Z7!

I've just gave my bottle to a next-door condo owner to use on his black Z06 Vette. .

Deanski

I actually bought the Glanz with the Porsche in mind. Unfortunately my wife's car is usually an after thought because of the difficulty of getting the time to care for it. If the durability is just decent I have found the product to always use on hers.

I also have the PP and MP for prep work. Along with cockpit premium (my new favorite interior dressing/cleaner). I have Lackfinish on pre-order and am very curious about it. I also have Tiefenpfleger but I have not really figured it out yet. I applied some to my outside trim but it seems to streak after the first rain. I want to prep the trim with alcohol before I comment on it too much (I just got the car, New to me but not new).

I agree that Perls is most likely my new favorite shampoo. Z7 doesn't do anything better than Perls except for foaming but I don't really find that beneficial since the lubricant protection seems to be the same for both products. Plus perls adds some protection that Z7 does not.

I said in another post PERLS was the BEST shampoo I ever used but its 9.00 for 250mil.GLANS makes great products and what I learned is if you have a german car it works better on that paint

Suuuuure...as though you would go back to Sonax after Perls...:D

They aren't interchangeable, but if you like Sonax and don't mind the lack of suds, you won't be disappointed.

Do you guys think this would make a good substitute for Sonax untill its available in the states again?

What I am trying to find THINKSNOW is a temporary fix or maybe a replacement for Sonax since no one knows if or when it will be available again.

Right now I am using Megs Gold Class

The nuances of car shampoos are slight, but you'll find more gloss, slickness, and beading with Perls.

Sonax provides better value and more suds in the bucket. If you are a volume washer, you might want to look into some of the other shampoos as many of them are great (EO, NXT come to mind). I don't wash that often so I don't mind shelling out a little more loot for a little more shine:up

you don't know what you're missing :D Check it out. The performance is excellent as is the $$ value.

1Z products are my favorite. I use them on all my vehicles although I have a ton of other products.
