Review: DP Wheel Coating

Great review! I use PBL wheel coating and the 4 oz bottle will probably expire or go bad (if they do) before I use it all up. I`ve always wondered what is the difference between DP and PBL wheel coating besides the price and the bottle. Any ideas?

I`m curious as to what the difference is as well. Heck, I want to know the difference between the paint and wheel coating within the same brand as well.

Hope someone from Autopia or PBMG chimes in.

I wondered about this as well when I was trying to decide between the PBL Paint Coating, and the PBL Wheel Coating. I did some searching and found this response from Nick @ AG .....

Glass and paint are two very different surfaces, so each coating needs to be specially developed to offer the maximum protection ("bonding"). Wheels are exposed to much higher temperatures than glass or paint, so a wheel coating needs to have a greater tolerance to heat.

That explains the paint/wheel issue, now it`s down to which is better DP or PBL and why. I bought my PBL in the coating kit when it first came out. They changed the paint coating, but the wheel coating remained the same. I really never had a problem with the first version on PBL paint coating and still using it 2 years later. I also have used the v2, but can`t tell the difference.

I used very little product. I used about 4 spritz` on the foam applicator pad for the wheel. And that`s because I`m priming the pad. On succeeding wheels, I`d imagine only using 2 to 3 spritzes at the most. I don`t spray the entire face of the foam applicator pad with the 4 spritz I did. I concentrate those sprays on a small spot of the foam applicator pad. That way the coating is soaked in a small area and not dispersed in the entirefoam applicator pad.

If you feel that your applicator is too dry then just add a spritz or two. This stuff is relatively cheap so adding another spray shouldn`t be too bad. I`d rather apply this stuff heavy than light to get the maximum protection and longevity.

Hope this helps.

Hi Marc, I`m sorry, but I didn`t quite get it (English is my second language). So, you sprayed the foam applicator about 4 times for priming the pad. The next wheels just use 3-4 sprays at most per wheel. So, about 10-13 sprays to coat all 4 wheels right?

Another thing, care to explain on what do you mean by concentrating those sprays on a small spot rather than letting them soaked into the whole applicator pad? I thought that it would be better so that I can spread the product easier. Sorry, new enthusiast here and would like to learn ;)

Thanks!

Yes, I sprayed the new foam applicator pad 4 times before using it on the first wheel. On the succeeding wheel, I used 2 or 3 sprays. You can keep on spraying as necessary. This is just an approximation. The amount of coating you will use will vary with the design of the wheel. More spokes or more intricate designs will have more surface area thus requiring more product to coat the entire face of the wheel properly.

The standard foam applicator pad I used is quite big and has a big area. Just imagine only 1/4 of the applicator pad exists. That`s the only portion I sprayed 4 times and that`s the only portion I`m using to coat the wheels. You can use the entire area of the foam pad but you`ll use more product IMO. There`s no right or wrong way of doing it. Do what`s comfortable for you. So long as you lay down some product on the wheel faces uniformly, you`ll be fine.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much Marc!! I`ll get some coatings next time and learn on doing it best way that suits me! Anyway, does the foam wax applicator ACC sales count as big? That`s the applicator that I`ll be using in the future. Again, thanks so much Marc!

Which one? Can you post a link?

The foam applicator pad I used is a standard wax foam applicator pad and its size is just my opinion. You may think it might be the perfect size and that`s OK.

My pleasure to help! :)

Thank you very much for writing such a thorough review!

I`ve enjoyed DP Wheel Coating, too. It`s what`s on my van`s wheels right now.

I`m going to try Dlux next just for the sake of exploration.

Great review. I was leery of wheel sealants after wasting money on CG wheel guard but after seeing your review, I`m going give coatings a try.

Really enjoyed the review. Finally got a chance to use the DP Wheel Coating a couple of weeks ago. So far I`m impressed. Just a couple of sprays of Ultima Waterless Plus+ and what little dirt or brake dust on the wheels is gone.

I`m glad you enjoyed the review Vegas1! I`m also glad to hear you`re having great results from this product as well.

I am blaming you for this Marc. My wheel coating and glass coating arrive today.
I`ve got a weekend project now.

I`m extremely happy to hear that. Hope you blame me more for your future purchases hehehe!

Hey, that`s what we`re hear for. We`re a detailing addiction support group right? :P

In all seriousness, please let us know how you like the coatings. I think you`ll love it. Hope it doesn`t get too hot when you apply your coating.

Yeah, today would have been better to do it because we got a cooler day. The tracking info now says the truck was delayed because of a train derailment somewhere. Now they have removed my delivery date. It was going to be today. Maybe I`ll mow the lawn this weekend instead.
