Retail Store Microfiber Towels

The hometex 18 for $10 pack from Sams is a great deal. I have used these on paint without any scratches whatsoever.

Isn't it possible that many more factors came into play such as the nap depth of each towel, the dust not being uniformly distributed on the panel, the towels having been previously contaminated?

Actually, I measure the dust on each side of the flat panel very precisely and made sure they were the exact same. Both towels were also brand new, washed with a batch of brand new MF towels. And yes, I'm sure nap did play a huge role, which is why the better ones were better. lol IMO the thicker, plusher and softer the better as far as QDing goes.

I noticed no one mentioned the PakShak Mf's. How do they stand up against the rest?

Also what's the difference between Ultra-Plush, Ultra-Fine and waffle weave. Do each serve their own purpose?

I really like my Pakshak towels (dare I say i'm a micropak junkie?!). I have 5 of there largest WW towels, 13 of there large Ultra's, 7 of there Ultra-Plush's, and 4 (5?) of the large Ultra-Fine's. I never have a problem with scratching whatsoever. The WW's I use for drying, the Ultra's I use for product removal, the Ultra-Plush's are for QDing, and finally the Ultra-Fine's I use for final buffing. Glass I use newspaper. Other jobs that require towels get either terry towels I got from advanced auto or vroom towels from walmart.

Pakshak's towels are GREAT , but we're discussing OTC towels that are more affordable.

Yes , the weave construction of each particular towel makes it more well suited to a specific task.

Does that mean that your work will be ruined if you use , say , a waffle weave to remove polish ?

No. It just means that WW's are specifically made to be more absorbant and , therefor , better suited for drying .

There are plenty of tutorials out there to explain this far better than I can. Do a quick search and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.

Hope this helped.

I recently converted from Cobra MF to MicroPak. I use my Cobras for the application of QD and OCW. I am the type that sprays the cloth, not the paint. I have used the Wal-Mart and Sam's MF. I had no issues with marring, but they tended to lint...A LOT. I washed correctly and everything, but those just seemed to lint up.

Kmart has a fuller line of specialty MF towels from Viking this year. They have the plush green detailing towel with satin stiching, the edgeless polishing MF towel, glass MF towels, and a 6sq ft drying towel. I read many comments on this site that really loved the thick green detailing towel.

Those VIKING towels are amazing...especially the green QD one and the edgeless polishing cloth. It's too bad I hadn't tried them by the time this thread was started.

Ehh, certainly not as cheap as some of the other OTC towels, but considering their quality is similar to those available online the pricing is pretty fair. These are not odd-job towels...these are the type you will be using on your paint. For the odd-job ones, buy in bulk from somewhere else.

All I use on visible paint is PakShak. I do not care if it costs a bit more I trust the product after years of using them and the man that stands behind them.

I have Meg's water magnet and Viking's blue drying and orange polishing cloth. The Viking's seem very soft but I've only used the orange cloth so far.

I was going to order some of Meg's mf polishing cloths from ADS. They are 3 for ~$7 and seem much bigger than the Viking orange towels.

Does anyone have experience with both? Which one holds up to washes better?

the VIKING quick detailing (green) and drying (gold) microfiber towels are top notch (have many different mf's and these are just as good as any other). not to mention... which is even better, they're available otc at your local k-mart. :2thumbs:

I agree that they are good quality. The orange polishing towel I got from Autozone was quite nice....waaaaay better than the Costco brand I was using as a polishing cloth. However, it was a little small in my opinion. If the Meg's polishing cloth is just as nice, I'd rather get that for its bigger size and really low price from ADS.

Its around 7.00 in my area for the blue viking "drying" MF towels. Is this the same as everywhere else? Anyways, the viking stuff can't be beat as far as quality, and since its OTC, it's all I use on my paint now. Vroom is good for other stuff (wheels, interior, ect...)

go to k-mart and get the gold x-large drying towel (6 sq.feet) as it's only $8.99 and while you're there, pick up the quick detailing towel (green)! :2thumbs:

i noticed that autozone has the new upgraded (old one was 16x24) blue viking microfiber drying towel (4 sq. feet) for around $7, but the one at k-mart is much larger and a better deal, imo...
