Restoring 15 year old paint that seems to rub off a bit...

I'm considering picking up a PC to keep both of my cars in the best shape possible. The 15 year old paint is on a red CRX Si. In the past, I've used Poorboy's Pw/C on it, and it looks better, but I think it would look far nicer if I hit it with some DACP and the PC.

My concern is this - even when using the Pw/C, I'd end up with a lot of red on the pad, just going by hand. Is this issue going to be far worse with the DACP and the PC, and if so, do I need to be concerned about it?

Thanks guys -

Alex

That's known as paint transfer...it happens with all single stage paint jobs. Don't worry, the amount that's coming off on your pad is alot less than you think.

wow, I have the same problem also. My dad has a 1986 300 SD mercedes midnight blue color. The car is beautiful but really needs a good detail to get it back into shape. The swirls are there and I know they can come off but man, polishing by hand, I always end up with a blue applicator. I freak out about it. Im afraid to remove all the paint off the car. I also would like to use the pc but worry that I might rub off the paint

I agree, no need to worry...actually, I haven't worked on single stage paint that didn't rub off when polishing or waxing.

Think of it this way: they paint your car with a quart (?) of paint...it would be hard to get a quart of paint into your pad...in fact, I bet even after doing the whole car, washing your pads and saving the water, and letting it evaporate, you couldn't get enough residue and stuff to make something the size of a penny. Really, there is no need to worry...These paints are about as hard as clearcoat paint (maybe not precisely, but somewhere in the same range), the only difference is that you can't see the clear building up on the pad.

Now get to it! :up

Anything a fellow CRX enthusiast has to say, I'll listen to...but seriously, thanks for the help, guys. I didn't know if it was just rubbing off from old age, or what, and now I know better...I shall proceed in my pursuit of beauty!

I think the "pigment rubbing off" issue might be a factor of old age, but probably mostly neglect. What I mean is if you waxed the car twice a month with a PC and cleaner wax, you'd have a good chance of staying ahead of the oxidation. I've been getting pretty lazy with my car, and busy with other things, so I don't do it that much.

Anyway, there isn't much way to "proceed in my pursuit of beauty" without removing some paint. If you do run out of paint before you get to the point of beauty you want, then I guess you weren't going to get there anyway. ;) Most times, though, there is more than enough paint...I was even able to get the hood of our neglected '86 GMC Jimmy to shine pretty well...well, between the rust and the hail damage that is. :nixweiss I did have the benefit of having a rotary, but even before I had that, I was able to make quite an improvement with the PC.

Oh, BTW, the 6" pads for pc or rotary work pretty well below the door strip and the bottom plastic! ;) I suppose it would help if it were a little smaller, but it'll do!

Have fun with your CRX!

Yeah, CRX's are among my favorite FWD cars, lotsa fond memories there :xyxthumbs

It's true that you'll get a lot less transfer (maybe none) with SS that's well maintained. I just did some polishing on the Volvo's SS and I got *no* paint transfer from the panels that were in good condition. But if you use something abrasive enough, you'll get transfer no matter what.

I do, however, find all but white SS to be a lot softer than any of the B/C paints I work with.

You can get 4" backing plates and pads for the PC/rotary; they come in handy for some areas.
