My dad has a 2000 S2000 with only 60K miles on it:

Problem is there is a nice small slit in the soft top that just appeared:

Has anyone ever successfully repaired a vinyl convertible top? Any ideas? Because the car is 10 years old and the rip is so small and on the side of the top I think I am going to try to tackle this one myself.

Hi;

I have a '04 S2k with 12kmi. The top is vinyl not cloth. It is most difficult to repair due to the stress and the folds that happen with operation.

Your hole looks like its in an area where the top has most of the folding when it retracts.

The only sure fire way is to replace the top. While you're at it, upgrade to the glass window.

This is actually an all-too-common problem. Do a little searching on s2ki.com and you'll see what I'm talking about. I believe Honda even came out with a service bulletin to help fix this.

even though its a 2000, you might get some help from the dealer since this is a common thing. g/l and if you need additional help, just PM me

HA local honda dealer will do NOTHING for me, don't worry not going to waste my time going there :mad: (They not only wouldn't help me replace my sunvisors on my one month out of warranty Si with 30K on it, that had already been replaced once via the tsb less than 2 years earlier, but they denied to american honda that they ever diagnosed them, even though I had a receipt, and then "exectued their right to refuse service". They also refused to touch my squeaking clutch master cylinder. American Honda was equally unhelpful and told me my request for them to replace my visors at no charge was "outragous". Needless to say I am NEVER buying another Honda and Honda lost a long time loyal Honda buying family.)

That being said the S2000 has been great!

I created a thread on S2ki:

S2KI - S2000 Forums -> Rip in soft top...

and have received some good answers there. I think I might try fltsfshr's idea with sunbrella patched from the inside.

Sounds like problems with the dealership then. Honda can't focus on each individual problem a customer has, and just as with other car makers they go by what one of their dealerships tells them. Just as it states in the tsb for the civic:

"Out of warranty: Any repair performed after warranty

expiration may be eligible for goodwill consideration by

the District Parts and Service Manager or your Zone

Office. You must request consideration, and get a

decision, before starting work."

I've heard of people getting some sick stuff from American Honda way out of warranty: clutches, engines, tops, etc.

I likely won't be purchasing anything from Honda in the future because they don't make a car that appeals to me anymore.
