So I have read mixed things on how to remove the products. Do you guys find that you prefer to do it w/ machine or by hand? What are the pros and cons to each?

Depends on the product. Removing most polish residues by machine is problematic as you're generally buffing them off before they dry, and polish residue loads up bonnets quickly.

Glazes/LSPs are better suited to machine removal, but it seems I usually need to do a final pass by hand to get that last 1%.

Gotta have pretty many bonnets for it to work out OK, even if you do your LSPs as thinly as I do.

The pros are the usual "why use a machine?" reasons...all those orbits per minute and the differences in motion between moving a polisher across a panel vs. rubbing a cloth across it.

I've had cases where I've used a fine sandpaper with a solvent lube to cut through cheap glazes/waxes that were deeply embedded onto the surface. I've also used stronger chemicals like Danase Water Spot Remover with lots of luck too. I'm a firm believer that the surface needs to be 100% bare prior to polishing.

I think we're considering two separate topics here:

1) using a PC/etc. to buff off product residue as opposed to doing it by hand, and 2) removing pre-existing products prior to a fresh detail
