removing pin striping

I just bought the car but I am already tired of the pin striping. When I peel it off, there is probably going to be some adhesive still on the car. Would using rubbing alcohol be a good idea to take the adhesive off? Or will it harm the paint?

I actually removed the pin stripe from my car when I first got it home as well. What I did was take a heating gun, if it has a rotary dial on it or something like that turn it on the lowest setting or close to it and just kinda put it about 2-3 inches away from the stripe and kinda walk your way from the front of the car to the end of the car where the stripe starts and finishes. Then take your fingernail and pick the edge of it up and start removing.

You might be able to get away with this by using a hair dryer or maybe not even using anything but a little heat will deffinately loosing the adhesive up, even though there is very little of it under pin stripes.

If you do encounter some adhesive left over just take some "Goo gone", spray it on, and take a "plastic" scraper and remove it that way. I did similar to that when I also removed the decals from the car.

EASIEST way is to buythe Eraser for using on a power drill. 1000 rpm worked well for me to remove sherriffs dept striping, except the wide reflective stripewhich was heat gun and plastic putty knife. Use some brand of adhesive removerfor the adhesive if using only heat gun asusing Eraser it takes both off nicely. Borrowed one from a body shop next door to me to start and then went and bought one for the nexttime. RANDAL

You didn't mention whether it was a new or used car. If it is used and depending on the age of the vehicle, you could get into color diferences upon removal of the pinstriping. I would check a small part before removal of it all.

Good luck,

Jim

As stated a heat run or hair dryer can be helpful...heat is what is needed to get the pin stripe up...the adhesive that is left can be removed with some Goo Gone or 3M has a adhesive remover that you can get online....I used the edge of an old credit card to scrape with the remover....very gently so as not to leave marks on the clear...then I used a chemical based polish to remove the rest...if you are working on an older car...chances are that the paint under the stripe is going to be darker...a good polishing will bring this back to life in most cases

It's a brand new car. I can pull up the pin striping easily just want to use rubbing alcohol to take off adhesive. Will the alcohol hurt the paint?

The alcohol will probably work fine.

Another option is 3M™ Adhesive, Tar & Wax Remover, 03607. You can get it at some auto supply stores, but your best bet to find it would be an autobody supply store.

I'm sure you realize that either product will remove not only the adhesive, but your wax/sealant.
You were probably getting ready to wax it again, anyway. :D
